MG TD TF 1500 - TD-TF Bell Housing

How can you tell if a bell housing is for the smaller or larger clutch assembly by just looking at it? PJ
Paul161

you can't,, the bell housing is the same,,

I don't understand Steve, I was told there is a difference in physical size of the inside, where the larger clutch assembly can touch an early bell designed for the smaller assembly. So was I told wrong? PJ
Paul161

Steve, they are different. The smaller one has a 5/8" shaft, the larger 3/4", so you can measure the bushings or shaft. There are other differences, and I'm not sure if they are interchangeable or not. George

Paul,
The later bell housing has a larger diameter shaft-3/4" I think.

Thanks for that info. I guess I wasn't told wrong. Now I Know how to tell. Thanks guys, much appreciated. PJ

Ok, I'll say it positively, the later bell housing has a 3/4" diameter shaft. The change over time was somewhere in late 1952. Paul, the TF will definitely have the 8" clutch. Cheers - Dave

The story is, Mine is good, but there's one for sale on ebay for $149.00, good price and if it was a later one I was going to grab it. Thanks again for straightening me out. PJ

Paul - I was a bit off on the date of the change over. The transmission got the 8" clutch in 1951 around Aug 15 (plus or minus).

Paul,
The repro clutch shafts on sale are not drilled for the pin. You have to drill it yourself. I have one here that I didn't install for that very reason when I put in the five speed. You can have it for a lot less than $149.

Apart from the two shaft diameters, the shaft boss inside the bellhousing is probably deeper for the smaller clutch.

Attached is a picture of a (dirty) 7.25" clutch bellhousing, modified for an 8" clutch by grinding down the bosses.
