MG TD TF 1500 - TD-TF Steering: Rubber cover at pinion shaft

My TF has a Moss steering rack & pinion. The rubber cover between the body of the rack housing and the pinion shaft is split and loose. Where can I buy a replacement?

"Rubber cover" is probably the wrong description. The rubber cover is not listed on the Moss site, nor shown in the TF Service Parts List. It may be used only on the Moss R&P. (yes/no?)

Moss warehouses and customer service are still closed to prevent spread of COVID-19.

Thanks,

Found this photo of the rubber cover on Moss website. Moss replacement R&P (RHD).

Hmmm it kinda looks like the trunnion boots

It probably goes without saying that the Moss steering rack is a replacement, by memory it was developed for Moss, and I doubt it was originally made for another car. Surely the part must come from Moss, if they even stock it. A stock MG rack has no such cover.

I seem to remember that the only ‘sealing’ is performed by a piece of felt packing.

CJ - yes, in the original. But this is a replacement rack from the other side of the world...

You are correct! Part number 56 on the diagram in the first post from Lonnie. "Thrust washer"

I think the felt seal is actually part 55, which does not exist on the replacement rack.

Thanks for the info. I'll see if Moss can supply one for their replacement rack when they reopen. Mine's usable, but prefer a "perfect" one.

If the boot is only split and not perished, "Supa Glue" could be your best friend. I use it to join O Ring extrusions when making non standard dimension O rings especially those found under the bezels of TF instrument glasses.

Thanks Graeme,

I may try it if Moss can’t supply a replacement.
