MG TD TF 1500 - TD/TF tool box cover fasteners
I have a TD. The cover to my tool box is off a TF. I note 4 holes in the center section. The rim on my tool box compartment does not have mating holes. From the way the cover flops around I think, maybe, there should be four fasteners there. I may have plugged these holes a long time ago when I was plugging all the extra holes in the body. Should there be fasteners? What size? How are they fastened, threaded holes, or nuts and lock washers? Thanks Jim B. ![]() |

Jim the lid is secured with four, thick, short metal screws. I have my originals in a plastic bag somewhere handy. I just need to find it. When I do I'll post a pic & include verniered dimensions. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Jim, Four(4) slot head self tapping screws were used originally. There should be four holes in the rim rest of the tool box. Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos"). |

Here are the ones on my TF. I suspect the slot head screws got replaced with Phillips head screws sometime in the past 62 years

Thank you all. Last week I backed the TD out of the garage under its own power to the first time in 48. Years. I drove it around the drive way. No brakes. That's fixed now. Running rich. That needs work. Very few oil leaks. After running the engine for an hour I re-torqued the head and set up tapper clearance. I was tightening all the bolts one more time. They all seemed loose when I ran into this. Almost ready for the first official run around the block. Jim B. |

The screws on my TF tool box are miniature slotted brass with spring washers and brass nuts. Are they correct, I haven't a clue, but they look nice and were on the car when I got it. PJ |

PJ, Rob has your answer. My guess is the holes were oversize & the PO elected to use machine screws & nuts. It is possible that they may well look very similar to the originals when viewed from above. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

My early production TF 1500 (August 1954) had small Phillips head sheet metal screws just like the photo Jack posted. I am sure they were original to my car which I have owned since 1973. It was unrestored when I purchased it. Regards, John |

At one time, in the very far distant past, before I owned it, something blew up in my car. It slit the foot board and the firewall and the tool box. They were re-welded. I suspect the front rail/lip on the tool box was replaced. I did find two holes on the rear rail, in the proper position for the screws. I used #6 by 3/8 long, as I had them. I had to drill the front two holes. Thanks to all. Jim B. ![]() |
