MG TD TF 1500 - td transmission bearing

I am rebuilding a td transmission and have replaced the layshaft and bearings and the 3 bearings on the mainshaft but when I snug up the nut on the mainshaft I get a bearing pre-load which I don't think should happen

when I tighten up nut without the rear casing the shaft turns freely but then when i replace the casing all is free with the nut finger tight, but after snugging up the nut i feel the load on the shaft

i have tried the rear flange in all positions and also reversed the spacer tube with no change

my question is what torque if any should be on this nut and if so will this load damage the bearing?

with the nut tight i can still turn the shaft by hand but there is a resistance some where.
any ideas would be appreciated

Don, are you sure that the felt rear seal is not binding between the bearing and the end of the flange?

I put the flange completely past the seal then compressed the seal to expose the face for the bearing then tapped the bearing into the rear casing to try and eliminate any binding from the seal. when installing the casing made sure the flange stayed in contact with the bearing and by tapping on the flange I got a solid metallic sound. without any nuts on the casing I still had the bind, the casing position seems to be controlled by the reverse shaft
I don't know what else I can do-- maybe try it without the oil guard??

Is he oil thrower in the right way round, it is dished to provide clearance on the tail bearing outer journal.
If it is the right way round, assemble without the seal and see if the problem goes away. If it does just grease up the seal and forget it.

problem has been resolved!! it was the oil retaining washer reversed the dish was touching the outer race and when I tightened the nut it put pressure on the inner race causing a bind thanks for your help
nice not having to re-invent the wheel.

Good call, Lee.

Isn't nomenclature amazing? Sounds as if Ray's "oil thrower" is Don's "oil retaining washer". Neither name shows up in the WSM page F.5 list of components. Looks as if the item is Part #104, 'Guard'. Troubleshooting via the internet. What were we doing 20 years ago? Bud

A lot of WAGs and if it didn't work one way. we tried the other. Cheers - Dave

the description of this washer that I used comes from the MGCC section of transmission rebuild by niel cairns and it would seem a more accurate desc of what I does.

when I first got my TD in 1969 it was just an old car with no following groups no parts available and no info
it needed a new half shaft and drum which I could not find so I made no attempt to drive it, it showed no sign of any attempt to repair so it was all original and undisturbed
it did not see the light of day until 2004 after I did a frame up restoration
now with the internet I can ask for and get assistance and parts from across Canada, and the world.
it is nice to know people with a common interest can now share their experiences and knowledge worldwide via the internet
thanks again for help and input

Oh, Is that different than Hugh's felt?

Dave, I need to go back more than 20 years. The earliest internet help I found in my computer is an email to Carl Cederstrand from April, 1996. BTW, being an engineer I use the SWAG system (Scientific Wild A** Guess). Bud
