MG TD TF 1500 - TD Value

A friend of mine wants to sell his TD but neither of us knows how to establish a fair market price. Any help with a ballpark figure would be appreciated. He has a lot of car knowledge and experience and I trust his evaluation of the cars condition completely.

1952 MG TD. #17794
Maintained to be a driver car with older restoration, great patina and overall excellent condition. Matching numbers, al-ways garaged and never seen wet weather in my ownership. Excellent chrome, interior, seats, carpets, hood and side cur-tains, new wind-wings. Doors align and close as they should. No dents or rust. Strong engine and gearbox, good set of (4) Dunlop tires plus spare, recently painted wheels, well-detailed engine with many maintenance parts replaced, cleaned and/or painted.
Long list of recent work including complete brake system replacement, new starter, generator, distributor, kingpin and suspension rebuild, new front springs, rebuilt carbs.

Very nice looking car but the black interior and hood and the wood dash would detract from my interest. I only say that because if I was going to buy a TD that needed very little work I'd want it as original as possible. I've seen prices range from $30 K for a frame of restoration 52 TD to $15 for a very nice daily driver.

Check out the MG Auctionwatch site. I am a great believer in using on line auctions as a valuation tool. You see some stupid prices and those cars never sell. Others which are at the correct market price get a buyer. There are seven TDs on the site at the moment and the average value appears to be late teens UK pounds.

High teens low 20's would be my guesstimate. It all depends on how bad he want's to sell it.

Agreed with Tim B about the black interior. I have no real issue with the wood dash - it's a period accessory so it doesn't detract from a driver level car. The black firewall is more of an issue for me, but again, for a driver level car a prospective buyer may not care. Black top is not original, but again, period correct and original tops often did not last long.

It's hard to tell the condition of the paint. If all else is well I'm not far off from LaVerne. My thoughts are in the $ 15-18,000 range. To get into the 20's the details start to matter more. He might ask $ 20,000 to start and be prepared to come down a little.

It looks like a very nice car. From your description of the mechanicals it's certainly a solid driver.

So this time last year I was in the market and actively looking at TD's. I was looking for as original car as possible and things that stopped me giving the car a second look were non standard interior color, wood dash, paint not being the same color under the hood and incorrect air cleaner. So in my case, I would not have even made inquiries. Having said that, the car does look very nice, and there is going to be a buyer who does not mind these things, but wants a decent looking car to enjoy. I too would have put it in the $18-20K range.
