MG TD TF 1500 - TD wheels

I learned something new today. May be old news to many but I was aware that the Td had solid disc wheels originally and were replaced by the perforated version. What I wasn't aware of was that the perforated wheels did not originally have the openings for the brake adjustment. Interesting to me. I guess I'll have to look at the production records and see when that change took place.

Here is the wheel I just mounted on TD 1250. I was looking for the hole to line up with the drum and there wasn't one.

And the wheel from the TD I had.

Interesting. I imagine that you could safely drill a hole if you really wanted to.

Laverne, I also have two rims that didn’t get the access hole one on each car. I figured it was intended as the spare and wouldn’t stay in a road position long enough to warrant brake adjustments. But I thought it was odd as well. Didn’t realize it until I got them powdercoated and back on the car and was looking to line up the holes and there weren’t any. Lol

No such holes on any of the 5 wheels on TD3042.

Interesting

About holes and wheels. Mine has got the break adjustment ones but also small ones on the rim. Late 53.
I thought it was to evacuate water for the spare wheel but the hole is not at the bottom of the spare wheel when on the rack.
Do you have these small holes ?

Tim the list makes no mention of the drilled discs being modified at some point to access the brake adjuster, but they certainly did at some point. I didn't see any mention of it in the production records.

Bill you are the second person I have talked with that had a mixed set of wheels. He choose to drill out openings to match.

Yes Laurent, both sets of wheels have this drain hole.
L E D LaVerne

LaVerne, yeah the production record doesn't provide any info regarding brake adjusting holes. My guess is that at some point during production someone came up with the idea of putting a hole in the wheel so the brakes could be adjusted without taking the wheel off. Since the wheel was not dramatically changed there probably wouldn't be a production number change. Perhaps just an internal production work order.

Laurent, I've seen the holes. Just finished some work on Lazarus' wheels. The holes are 1/8" in diameter and are approximately diametrically opposite the valve stem hole. They are on the front and rear sides of all four of the wheels. Bud

I thought maybe the 1/8 holes were to use hooks to hang them while being painted. They wouldn’t be big enough to act as counterbalance for the valve stem hole. Idk. Just guessing?

I like Bill's painting idea for the holes. For wire wheel painting the best method I found was placing the wheel on a hub/axle and have someone spin it while I sprayed the paint on.

4139 did not have adjustment holes when I got it. I added the holes.

Would water even drain from the small hole in the rim? Seams the tire would seal the hole when inflated anyway. Forrest TD/C/22679
