MG TD TF 1500 - TD Windscreen Vertical Stanchion Screw

Checked the FTFU catalogue & can find the six horizontal machine screws that secure the stanchions to the scuttle but there is no mention of the other two machine screws that sit vertically & secure the inboard part of the stanchions. I believe these 2 screws are smaller than the other 3 & (like the 6) were originally slot heads on early TD's & were then later changed to the Phillips head. There is also a specially shaped spacer that enables this screw to be secured to the underside of the scuttle curve. I'm trying to locate these two screws & spacers. Can anybody shed any light? Cheers

Peter,
Anglo Parts sell them-if you care to re-mortgage your house:
https://www.angloparts.com/en/catalogues/picture/805.
Their catalogue is brilliant but their prices are a joke!
M5 screws will fit and the spacer is easily made from brass round stock.

I ordered a windscreen screw kit from Moss and in it were two slotted flat countersunk un chromed screws that go in the lower side of the stanchions. Chromed slotted screws go on top of the frame, the rest are Phillips. PJ

You can buy M6 x 60 stainless, raised head, countersunk cross head screws on eBay for 75pence each. I have replaced every screw associated with the windscreen with stainless ones for about £10. All look perfect.

Thanks Declan. The P/N for the Anglo kit is 133.330 & illustration 13 shows the kit with the smaller screw & spacer that I require. I'm not buying the kit at those prices & I figured I'd probably have to make the spacer anyway. PJ I'm OK for the frame as that is complete, glazed & ready to be installed, including the 3 stanchion screws on each side. It's just the screw I described on top of the stanchion that I require. It sits under the rubber that runs across the scuttle & is completely separate from the frame & helps secure the windscreen assembly to the scuttle. It's the smaller screw in the illustration. M5 or M6? Probably M6. I'll check out Tower Fasteners tomorrow & see what they have in metric slots in stainless. I'll match the head to the other 6 screws, probably a pan or raised head if the Anglo illustration can be relied on. They do confirm the early TD screws as being slots though, just like the TC. Peter,
I fitted my re-chromed windscreen about three weeks ago. The M6 would not fit through the scuttle and I used M5 with no problem.

Peter

I was missing one of those spacers, an old plastic screw driver handle provided material to make one.

Nice idea Graeme. I've got more screwdrivers than I know what to do with. I also have some acetal rod lying around left over from when when I had dozens of handbrake pawl rod bushes (collets) turned up, so that gives me three options. Cheers

One of my 75pence stainless screws. Bought similar ones, both raised, flat head, cross head and slotted from Spalding Fasteners. After a quick polish they look exactly like chromium.

As a general rule the screws that got covered by another part were straight slotted and the exposed ones were Phillips. As Peter noted some of the earlier cars may have had all slotted.

Note also that real Phillips screws are very hard to find today.

One other note.

The heads on the original screws are narrower than the heads on modern screws.

I used SS 10-32 which are very (very) close to 2 BA.

As supplied I did not like the heads.
I trimmed them down in a lathe to fit the holes and match the old ones I took out. The new OD measured 0.320.

I also cut them to length.

FTFU is able to supply the spacers (less than $8/pair) as well as the door sill plate screw set & the four door lock cover screws. I'm getting the two, short, metric, oval, slot head stanchion screws & nuts from Tower Fasteners here in Sydney. So all the hardware for the sills, windscreen, strikers & door locks is now sorted. Many thanks gentlemen.
Cheers
