MG TD TF 1500 - TD & 4/44 Generators

Does anyone know if the genny that was fitted to the 4/44, is the same as the one that was fitted to the TD? Cheers

Peter,

The 52 TD was fitted with a C39PV-2 generator P/N 22265A or 22265B

The 4/44 also had a P39PV-2 unit P/N 22258D or 22258E

If you have these P/Ns then they are interchangeable.

All this type of information can be found in the following document. It requires some cross referencing between the different chapters.
I have a paper copy, but find the on line version more practical.

Thanks John, I'll do a physical comparison when I again have both gennys side by side. I believe that the one on the TD at present isn't original so if I can use the one from the 4/44, especially if the date is evident once cleaned up and repainted and it is appropriate, then I'll go with that. I'll find some time tomorrow to check out the link. I do appreciate your help and the spirit in which it is offered. Cheers

Peter, the 4/44 generator does not have the tach drive endplate and the armature shaft is therefore shorter. If you have a TD tach drive endplate then the armature shaft can have an extension fitted to suit. Pretty easy modification if you have a lathe.

Thanks Hugh. Can the armature from the TD genny simply be replaced into the 4/44 genny? Are the pulleys identical? Brushes in the same location? As I have access to both gennys (the TD one may be suspect) and no real use for an original 4/44, it might be of value if I were to write an illustrated piece on the options available, for the benefit of TTORC members. I'll contact you offline seeking more detail once I get the 4/44 bits back and am able to make a comparison. The 4/44 engine is presently being stripped on the other side of the Blue Mountains as I've sold the entire engine to a TF owner. He just needs the block and head, but I'm keeping all of the internals. I hope that you finally received a copy of the April issue? Some members have reported some address issues with Mail Chimp. Cheers

Hi Peter, yes the TD armature can be used in the 4/44 generator case. I don't know about the pulley for sure but I doubt if it an be used since the diameter determines the tach reading. They are pretty easy to change but be careful you do not chip the rim of the TD pulley.

Thank you John and Hugh. I have been advised that the Wolseley didn't appear until 1952, so the body wouldn't be date appropriate for my Feb 1951 car, but somebody else might be able to use it. What follows are a couple of pics that I took of another unit that I picked up today. The number John provided suggests it's from a 4/44. It's dated 9/55 and is a C 39 PV 22258, possibly D? No provision for the tacho but the pulley may be useful and the armature could be extended if its serviceable and the stator/field windings could be used as well. The pulley diameter is approximately 82 mm. I saved some pics that Dave Du Bois had posted some years back and the pulley and fan look very similar. I've yet to check out the link that John provided. Can anyone confirm if the 82 mm diameter pulley in the pics is suitable for a TD? If so I'll clean it up and paint it red to match the engine. Cheers

Peter,

I just checked my TF generator pulleys and they are indeed 82mm in outside diameter. I suspect the TD pulleys were the same.

Thanks Rob. It's nice to have a win! Does anyone have an end plate for a TD/TF genny that they might want to sell? Cheers

Peter,

How does a NOS Lucas rear end plate (for the Tacho Drive Gearbox attachment) sound ! Contact me.

Rob the end plate is a brilliant! I also recently found another one that had been really abused and is just repairable. It is only missing its brass oiler, so If anyone has an oiler that they'd sell please get in touch. It shouldn't be too difficult to turn one up though. What it does show is the extent of the damage to the rear bronze bush that an overly tightened fan belt can do. This was written up in an article by Dave Du Bois some years ago that I think was called "Keep your belts loose". The belt that Moss sold at one point; and may even still sell, was too short and was responsible for the premature wear on the rear sintered bronze bush on too many gennys. On the one I'm working on the bush has been completely worn through on one side right to the edge of the housing, by the stress applied to the armature; and the threads that the tacho gearbox attaches to have also been attacked internally in one small area, by the fan belt pulling that end of the armature out of position. This has resulted in a slot of missing thread about 7 mm x 2 mm. I'll post some before and after pics once the new bush has been pressed in when I'm able. Cheers

Does anyone have any detailed info on the necessary armature mod to extend the 4/44 armature to enable the TD/TF tacho drive engagement? I have three armatures from complete and operational 4/44 generators and would like to convert them all. Notes, tech drawings, rough sketches, pics or any information at all that will assist me in this and also in writing a piece for subsequent publication would be very much appreciated. Obviously those who contribute will be acknowledged. I'm also interested in the TD/TF genny end plate in any condition as I may be able to repair it. pjbm at bigpond dot com. Cheers

Peter

I have just perused my Lucas Reference and the Part No listings for the MG TD and TF are as follows:

Generator 22744
Armature 54215119
End Plate 54214584

Big differences to what has been posted.

Noted your post on the other Forum, there is a lot of discussion and images regarding your request if you do some searching maybe you might find some answers.

Peter,

I had the same idea idea in Jan 2019, contacted Declan knowing that he has the machine tools an knowledge to make this mod. It was a long discussion but nothing happened. However I did make a working drawing of the requirements, attached. There is no copyright on it, but If you do make some, can you make a couple for me at cost?

J Scragg

John that dimemsioned tech drawing is an amazing response as is the pic Graeme that you emailed me direct. I'll include both in the article. Apparently these TD/TF armatures go for staggering sums but TTORC isn't looking to make money, simply to provide a service to it's members. If any other altruistic owners out there feel the same way then please feel free to contact me. It's all about the cars, not the owners. AND remember it doesn't matter who you are, you can't take it with you! Not the car, the money, the parts or what I think is bloody unforgivable, the knowledge!

PS. Re the 'post/posts' on the 'other forum.' This is the only T Type forum I've EVER visited. Seems somebody else is using my name.. I do hope they have nice things to say. Cheers

Hi Peter, the adapter for the tach drive is pretty easy to make. Set up the armature in a lathe - supporting the free end in a steady. Drill and tap the end of the armature shaft to a convenient
size, I used 1/4-20. Make the adapter following the sizes on an original T-series generator armature. The only slightly tricky part is cutting the slot, I used my milling machine with an small cutter.
Cheers, Hugh

H.D. Pite

Thanks Hugh. May I use the two pics in the article? I don't have a metal lathe but there are other TTORC members here who do and who will no doubt offer to knock a few up at little or no cost for our members. Again thanks to John, Graeme and Hugh. Cheers

I once used as a temporary substitute a generator from Bug Eye (Frog Eye) Sprite which has the tack drive end and bolts up to the TD without problems. I think it actually as a bit more output.
