MG TD TF 1500 - TDC carbs

just working on the carbs for a friends TDC. The rear carb shaft return springs had been wound up so tight that the spring seat was forced sideways cutting a groove in the shaft. The front carb was also wound up so tight that one flexi coupling between the carbs was twisted about 10 deg !!!
By the way the present owner did not do it, this is as bought.
Every time we touch this car it bites us.

Can't weaken the TDC carbs. Fuel height correct but still too rich.
It is fitted with LS needles and I don't know the correct ones. I presume that as they are 1 1/2" that TF ones would be correct, any ideas?
This is a friends car bought as a box of bits. We have converted it LHD to RHD and fitted a 5 speed conversion. It drives well but do not want to run it in a rich condition.

Moss motors web site indicates the GJ needle is the standard for the 1 1/2 inch carbs

I think that will be the case. The TDC carbs are a weird combination of parts. They are 1 1/2" but not the same as the TF, they have the Dustfree pots but not drilled for the transfer port and have a vented cap on the damper. They have a similar body to the H2 but no chamber port in the intake flange.

The 4031 carbs are distinct, and were only used, I believe on the TD/C or Mark II cars. The number "4031/" is cast into the body, followed by a vibra-etched 8 or 12, for rear and front carbs.

Although it is very similar to the GJ needle, the proper needle for the TD/C is the LS1.

There are early and late iterations of the 4031 carb, the earlier having the intake flange holes filed inward to oblong slots, to fit the use of the standard TD air intake manifold (snorkel). Later cars used a revised and re-cast snorkel with widened locating holes, and a larger-diameter oil-bath filter.

My MGA -AH 100-4 carbs with GJ needles & blue springs runs great, as confirmed with a wide band 02 meter, 7/16" float level & jets .040" below the bridge! LS were more than too rich!
Oh and with a vacuum advance CSI distributor :)!

I could never get LS1 needles to work well. May have back in the day with pool fuel. Change to GJ with no problems with modern fuels. Tried red and blue springs using blue at the moment. 20wt up to 60wt oils. For different fuel loads and 7/16 float level.
