MG TD TF 1500 - Tech Day Items

I'm organizing the 2016 annual T Type Tech Day here in Sydney which is on again on Sunday 6th November at the Lane Cove River National Park. Anyone have any suggested topics?

One of the practical sessions will cover the restoration of an original TF water pump (24433) using a kit I've assembled which includes a readily available $30 washing machine pump seal. I hope to have 6 presenters which will also include a TD restoration update from a recently completed TD or two. Also hopefully a session on supercharging the T Type. All suggested topics welcome. If interested in attending please email me at pjbm at bigpond dot com. Cheers

Peter - do you have complete kits put together for the water pump? Sounds like a good idea, and I'll buy one!

Let me know if you need any of my supercharger literature or information.

How about one on distributor woes, and properly timing a TD with a full-advance timing light?

Sorry I can't attend.

peter,
Does your water pump kit require any machining to the housing??

Steve
Steve Wincze

Hi Tom & Steve. Short answer Tom is I have only a few kits with the spindle left & I'll be using those to restore the 24433's that I have. If you're interested however I'll send you a copy of an illustrated article I've written which details the disassembly, restoration & reassembly of the 24433, but please don't circulate it as it's copyrighted & it's NOT for publication!

The components in the kit consist of the washing machine seal with one ceramic & one graphite face, two circlips with eyes, 2 bearings, two felt seals, one stainless steel spindle, one Woodruff key, a 5/16 UNF locknut, 2 x 5/16" flat washers & a 25 mm x 4 mm rolled pin. These items are generally available but do require some hunting around. I was able to source all of them here in Sydney except for the quantity of made to measure woolen felt seals which came up from Melbourne. (I can sell you a couple of these @ $3 each plus postage). The difficult part is the spindle but I found a machinist here who was able to do some at a mate's rate using a couple of originals as a template. This meant waiting for some months to get them. The impeller is the problem. They are not available here though Butch sells brass 6 vane jobs in the States. Shipping is the killer though. I purchased some of the much more difficult to restore 22838's, which was used on the TC & the early TD, so that I could reuse the impellers.

Steve the 22838 does require a fair bit of machining but as I don't possess a lathe they are uneconomic for me to restore. Once the lathe work is done however the kit will also fit the 22838. The 24433 does not require machining, except to turn down the boss on the impeller to accept the ceramic disc.

The dizzy issues are a good suggestion. Cheers

Since I'm unlikely to row my boat to Sydney by then....how about you shoot video of the sessions and post them to you tube. Like I did with the anti roll bar. It would be a terrific resource. Be sure to use captions so I don't require a translator ... Mate.... :-)
L E D LaVerne

My rowboat and anchor is not long enough to make it from Florida so if you can post a video to UTUBE it would be most welcome to all. Thank you in advance.

Peter,
I trust that the session goes well. Too bad about the timing, though, as I'll be in Sydney in December. Looking forward to the pics at least.

Peter,

Congatulations on your zeal in organising the Tech Day for today in Sydney. I would have liked to attend however Perth as you know is a
'moon' way. I know the day will be appreciated by T typers.

Cheers

Hi Joe & Rob. Absolutely magic day! Superb weather yet again. We had presenters covering the topics mentioned above. The discussion on the coil vis a vis polarity was really interesting with 3 very knowledgeable owners offering valuable info. There was a nice mix of practical & theory & some really terrific cars. See pics.

Joe when you get here call me on the number above or email me. I'll pull a bottle of red out of the cellar & we can have a glass or two over a meal at our favorite Japanese or Asian restaurant. Cheers

We had 16 owners, 10 cars not including the B. 3 TD's, one arrived late & is not shown, one YT & 6 TF's. This would no doubt have pleased you Rob!. Cheers

Peter,

Looks like to be an excellent Tech Day to me. Some very nice T type and Y type examples too. The TF with the yellow number plate
'MGT' seems to have a close colour to MG Red.

Well done on taking the trouble to assist others in the maintenance
and knowledge of our wonderful little cars.

Cheers

Peter,

Thanks for the invitation. I'll look you up when we get there.

Looks like a very successful day. What's the verdict on the Colortune? Does it work as advertised?

Joe
Joe Olson

Yeah, pretty much. The key is of course to have your carbies in good working order. No air leaks at the spindles, needles & jets in good nick, properly seated, float levels correct, glands & washers all OK. Otherwise you're wasting your time. What was interesting is that by using the choke we could see that the colour did indeed change as the mixture was enriched. Also able to discern a difference between #1 #4 which indicated that they required tweaking. Works better in a darker space obviously. See you next month. Aged Shiraz & Japanese OK? Cheers

Anything with Shiraz sounds good to me!

Hi Peter,
I just read about your tech day. I wonder how I didn’t stumble across the Association before. Are you having one again this year? If I set off from the Sunshine Coast in my kayak I could probably be there by November. I just started to dismantle my TF 2071 water pump. It’s a 22838 and I would be interested in hearing of any chances of restoring or having it restored without shipping it overseas.
Regards,
Chris
C I Twidle

Hi Chris. On again on Sunday 5th November. Same venue. Email me at the address in the initial post above & I'll send you the illustrated article on restoration. Please note this is NFP.

I'm late in getting organised this year as I've had two bouts of different strains of the flu, one following another. Again all T Type owners past, present & future are most welcome. Suggestions for topics needed. One will definitely be on the TD clock. :-) Cheers

Peter, in the beginning of this tread (2016) you talk about an illustrated article you have written which details the disassembly, restoration & reassembly of the 24433.

Is it possible that I receive a copy?

My email address is quastje at hotmail dot com
at=@ and dot=.

It will be for personal use. I have three water pumps which needs to be restored.

John van den Boorn

John, you have mail. Cheers
