MG TD TF 1500 - Test of Starter
In our TDs without a solenoid switch on the starter if negative pole (positive ground car) is applied to starter a good start should engage ??? I believe the ignition switch isn't involve, am I on the right path |

previous post is with starter still in car |

The ignition circuit is separate, so you can turn the engine over without starting it. Dave H |

If you apply power to the negative side and the starter is attached to the engine, then yes it should spin. If not then you most likely have a bad starter. The only other possibility is a bad ground but I don't see how it could be that bad. |

Caution. Apply power with appropriate cable gauge. to small and the wire will get hot or even melt but the starter won't spin. Laurent. |

I once borrowed one of those clamp over the wire gauges to measure amperage and just for my information found the starter on my TD while cranking over the room temperature engine drew 105 amps. I assume that's normal as the car always starts up fine. |

Jon as Laurent suggests it's essential to ensure the test cable is capable of handling the current. I'd use a pair of jumper leads directly from the battery. This will ensure both good power and earth (ground). Cheers Peter TD 5801 |
