MG TD TF 1500 - TF 2071 comes to life
I bought TF 2071 as a stalled project 2 years ago. There have been many milestones (finishing building a shed to work in, rolling the chassis on its own wheels....) today was another major milestone.
The original engine hadn’t run for nearly 40 years and today I ran out of excuses and called my neighbour Doug (retired mechanic, mate and mentor) and together we did a final check before hitting the switch for the first time. To my delight it fired immediately and Doug’s practiced hands began a few preliminary tweaks of the carbs before I hit the panic button - I hadn’t tightened the spark plugs! Again she ran and Doug soon had her idling smoothly. Time to let it cool down now. That’s how it will stay till I have enough bodywork done to drive it. Many thanks for all the great support from the guys on the forums. I couldn’t have done it without your help. Chris |

Chris, Congratulations on your efforts in turning the TF motor over. The bodywork will no doubt be a challenge, however the chance of owning a magnificent model of MG,will make the work worthwhile. TDs and TFs are classic lookers but with decently engineered structures. Keep the questions and queries coming re your future rebuild of the bodywork tor completion. You will only want to do any of the bodywork once !! Cheers Rob Grantham |

Congrats Chris. This is a great milestone and one that should be celebrated for sure. I was in the same place in 1974 when I restored my car and just had to see and hear it run, knowing I still had so much more to do on it. Note the puddle from the leaking radiator and the power coming from the jumper cables. We can start a contest on what is wrong with this restoration. :-) ![]() |

Seemed chrome plating rocker covers and breather plates were all the rage in the 60's. My old girl had the same treatment. Cheers Peter TD 5801 |

Never mind the restoration photo, what about those side burns C.C? Great landmark moment starting the engine Chris! Matthew. |

"Never mind the restoration photo, what about those side burns C.C?" That was not me but they were all the rage then. :-) |
