MG TD TF 1500 - TF 8353 First Drive With New Rear

The temp was nice yesterday so, I took the TF out yesterday for it's first long drive with the 4.1 rear in it. It performed flawlessly! We have one particular hill here that most cars running 65 MPH drop to around 53/54 when cresting the hill, I hit it at 60 and dropped to 50 at the crest, in 4th gear with a stock engine. This thing runs like a rabbit. I'm glad I didn't take heed to some of the negative inputs on putting a 4.1 in it instead of a 4.3. I have to be careful running on the flats, as this thing picks up speed with no effort, not paying attention, I looked down and was doing 70 in a 65 MPH zone. Damn I love this car! PJ

I was one of those nay-sayers, who thought a 4.3 would be better. Sorry! Live and learn...

Stock 1250 or 1500?

1500 Tom. Completely rebuilt and is very strong. PJ

Paul that 1500 engine maybe the real difference. It gives you just enough extra to handle that rear gearing.

Paul one of the guys in the Valley runs a 1500 with a 3.9. His only problem is gearing in the city streets but it runs like a raped ape on the highway. There again fairly level in the desert.

Dave Clark has also sold those lower rear ends to AU so the guys could run with the big dogs on trips -- MGBs.

Joe

PS Never thought of the MGB as the bid dogs. Guess it is all relative.

Driving Aussie road conditions with a stock 1250 motor and TC gearbox there is no way I would consider the taller diff ratio as a practical option. The 4.3 ratio is the solution, no longer is the engine screaming at 90 KpH and there is the ability to negotiate most hills without having to snatch for third.

I advocate considerable concern at some of the speeds you Yanks claim to drive these cars at, sounds like a recipe for disaster based upon the handling and braking characteristics of this vintage of vehicle.

I couldn't imagine 4.1 with a 1250 in western NC. Nothing but long slopping hills. I put Dave Clark's 4.3 rear in and it does make a huge difference, but long back-road hills call for 3rd. Under 2,000.. forget it.

Our engines live at 2,500 to 3,500 anyway.

The 2 lane road I have to use to get to a 4 lane has a speed limit of 65 MPH. The average speed on it is 65, if you go much slower you'll get run over, that's one reason I went to a 4.1 rear. Naturally the steering, brakes, tires and wheels have to be in top condition. With everything new, I can get a little squeal from the tires with not too much effort while braking on asphalt. PJ

If you drive an old MG in the states you have two choices:

* Move with the traffic and risk death if you get in an accident

* drive slowly, pull over a lot and get yelled at frequently

I choose the later just because I like to cause trouble. :-)

Where do you guys find your 4.1 CWPs?

No problem locating a 4.3, but the 4.1 was only available on the MK II MGA.

Gord, I got mine from Dave Clark, I think it was the last one he had. I was very fortunate to have Dave build my rear with it, even though my axles appear to be in perfect shape, I bought his high grade axles also. PJ

I have been running a 4;1 for almost 10 years in an unblown TD...I am bored .80 but no porting or anything else. Never have a problem, love it on the freeways.
