MG TD TF 1500 - TF Air Filters

My filters are intact, the "screen" was very flimsy and the filtering was being done by foam. Due to age the foam has to go. Got new elements and screens. from Abingdon Spares.

The screen came as flat piece of metal, the correct width and about 14" long so I worked it around a large coffee can to make it somewhat curcular, then I inserted it into the outer of the air filter to do the final shaping and added the inner part to hold it all together. I have an overlap of about 5/8", should I drill and pop rivet, tack weld the ends to hold it together or just be prepared to wrestle it into position at each element change?

The elements came about 3" diameter, somewhat compressed, I had to arrange the pleats evenly around the circle in an eye pleasing manner.

I figure I will arrange for the join to be down, out of sight, second question, what color should the screen be, black is my guess, but I could go for silver too.

Thoughts, any pics would be great.

Thanks,

Peter

PS. I figured it is easier to make up the whole filter and install, correct length bolts on order from LBCarCo.

The perforated cover on my original Vokes filters are spot welded into a circle. I have set the overlaps to be at the bottom and thus out of sight. Clausanger's book show the screens, as you call them, to be silver. If you don't have Clausanger's "Original MG T Series" book it is a must for your Christmas present list!

Black screens ex factory.
Attached a pic of my filters with the little bike spanner that I find very handy for this job.

The screens on unrestored TF9052 are black. See below.

Black Vokes air cleaner bodies, black screens. TF Vokes Air Cleaners
were originally affixed with three(3) different bolt types. Often not right on many cars. Not all detail in books is correct.

I should have spent longer looking at Clausanger's. There are two photos one with silver screens the other black! Who was the proof reader?

Thanks all, I do have Clausangers, and did notice the 2 different colors.

I have 2 of those little bike spanners, most useful tool on a TF/TD.

It would appear that the consensus is black, that will be easy. I am going to try a couple of small self-tappers to pull it together while I arrange spot welding.

There are a considerable number of errors in the pics in Clausager's book, as is the case with Horst Schach's tome as well. Although very pretty to look at, almost all, if not all of the cars in Clausager have been restored with some showing considerable departures from the factory. The beauty of a site like Mr Couper's however is that it is constantly being refined as new information on original presentation is discovered, which means commonly held misconceptions are then corrected. Matthew Magilton's TF is an unrestored 'one owner' as I believe it was purchased new by his father, so it is indeed an extremely useful source of original information. Cheers

Not quite one owner Peter. Dad purchased the TF from the first careful owner.

Interesting my TF air cleaners are all hard chromed. Going on the other items in the engine bay the PO must have had ready access to a chroming shop. Not original however very serviceable.

The hoon philosophy in the 60's Graeme was chrome, chrome & more chrome. I had to de-chrome my rocker cover & the engine breather plate. Surprisingly it cost almost as much as it would have to get it chromed. Cheers
