MG TD TF 1500 - TF carb rebuilding service
Helping a buddy with a TF. He'd like to send the carbs out for a proper rebuild. Who does a good job? ... |

Unless the shafts are worn it's a fairly easy do it yourself job. Dave Braun (Minnesota) who frequents this site is one choice. http://www.dbraun99.com/ Joe Curto in New York is another choice. |

Moss sells the master rebuild kit for $169.00. Joe gets $500.00/pr., $370.00 more. That's pretty high considering the description. I assume all the gaskets and seals, float needle valves, etc. are included. From Joe's site: Included in the price of the rebuild is: complete cleaning of the carburetor (castings are tumbled for a even appearance), replacement of throttle shaft, fuel jet, metering needle, plating of steel and brass hardware (in either zinc, silver nickel, or black zinc depending upon which is appropriate for the application). I don't have the time and he doesn't want to do it himself. ...... |

I should have said bushings earlier, not shafts. I have no idea what Dave charges. |
MG LaVerne |
Chris Campbell, at Vintage Connections in OKC, did mine earlier this year. He charged a little less than Joe and they were done right here at home. I would do that again. Cheers, Frank |

Thanks LaVerne, My price list is on my website. I get $410 for rebuilding a set of H Series; another $110 if I have to rebush the bodies and rebuild throttle shafts, as the pinning is difficult to get right, as well as the hand reaming needed for the bushes. Replacement throttle disks or Nitrophyl floats are extra. Return shipping is included. I do plate the hardware, and surface polish them to the point that finger prints and oil staining are much less a problem. The time involved is about 12 hours per set, and 14 hours if they need to be rebushed. The attached picture is a pair in process. The overflow pipes were temporary, and the inlet runner was done at extra cost. Hope this helps, dave ![]() |

I have a set of Dave's rebuilds on my BGT. They not only run perfectly, they look very nice also. |

As LaVerne has suggested, rebuilding the carbs including a worn throttle shaft, can be done by most of us. Getting the jet assembly properly lined up takes a bit of patience; but expect to put in a good 14 hours if you are properly set up in the first place. If your carb bodies have worn throttle holes. they can be enlarged and sleeved with Delrin sleeves sold by Burlen - just ask them. To ream the carb body, you will need a quite special reamer. I haven't seen it in recent Moss catalogues, but the part nbr is 386-385 and is shown on their web-site. It used to sell for $88, but today is listed at $235! Probably less expensive to drill the carb body and install over-sized shafts. Again, for this, check with Burlen. Gord Clark Rockburn, Qué. |
