MG TD TF 1500 - TF dash frame pictures

Does anyone have any pictures of a TF chassis with the dash frame bolted to the roll hoop? Or otherwise, any shots inside the firewall/cowl with the dash out? Need to see how and where it is mounted. Thanks,George
George Butz III

There are two metal brackets on either side, bolted to the dash back and screwed to the wooden frame.

George -

I am creating eight posts each with a photo and description of the dash frame and mounting in my TF that is undergoing restoration. (Hope that your request is a response to my SOS to you!! I have a lot more photos if you want them.) We can compare mine with other TFs who post photos.

The TF dash frame is totally different to a TD frame. The TF dash frame is a single separate steel part that goes from left to right. Tabs on the front ends are screwed to the wooden front top inner rail. The tabs are also secured by carriage bolts through the firewall. The end plates are bolted through the scuttle side rail, front quarter panels, cowl, and windshield brackets. The end plates are also screwed to the latch pillar and wooden scuttle side rail. The dash is attached to the end plate and also to two bolts near the center of the dash frame.

The mounting stud on the rear-view mirror goes through the cowl and through a bar on the dash frame.

Here is the Moss Motors diagram of the dash frame:

This is the cowl sitting in place on my TF tub. The two rods sticking out of the bottom of the cowl are two of the three places where bolts for the windshield bracket go. Nothing is firmly bolted together. Just about everything is held by clamps. Preliminary fit is not good.

The front lip of the cowl goes between the two wooden front top rails (inner and outer). The sides of the cowl extend over the front quarter panel as indicated by the unpainted area on the quarter panel. As noted previously, three bolts hold the windshield frame to the cowl, quarter panel, wooden scuttle side rail, and dash frame. The wooden scuttle side rail can be seen between the quarter panel and the dash frame.

This is the full width of the dash frame. You can see the tabs that are screwed and/or bolted to the wooden front top inner rail. The cowl, a wooden scuttle side rail, the quarter panel, and wooden latch pillar are attached to the right end plate. The cowl is resting on the left end plate.

The underside of the cowl. The mounting stud of the rear-view mirror is secured to the flat bar in the center. Two tabs on the metal dash are secured to the dash frame with the two hex head screws on each side of the flat bar.

This is a closeup of the right side of the dash frame. You can see the tab and the end plate. The lower tip of the cowl is bonded to the upper edge of the quarter panel with lead to form the point at the peak of the door. Not bonded yet. The rods are through two of the three mounting points for the windshield. Other holes in the end plate are for screws into the wooden scuttle side rail and the wooden latch pillar.

This is the left side of the dash frame. You can see the carriage bolt going from the firewall through the front tab on the dash frame. The welded nut at the right accepts a hex screw through a slotted tab on the dash.

The dash frame is not attached to the roll hoop. An adjustable plate connects the roll hoop to the wooden front side rails and to the firewall. You can see the plate in the closeup of the right side of the dash frame above. A red "R" is on the plate.

On my TD, the roll hoop to cowl wood mounting plate is on the front side of the hoop tab, not the back. Any consensus from the group which side is correct- on a TF? George
George Butz III

I found a photo of the hoop and plate taken before I removed it. The plate was bolted to the engine side of the hoop, unlike the my photos earlier in this thread. An wooden wedge goes between the plate and the wooden front side rail.

Looks like I was also wrong about similarities between TD dash frames and TF dash frames. Very similar.

Does anyone else have any pictures of a TF in the areas shown in Lonnie's pictures? Original and/or during tub rebuild would be great. George

George B.,

You probably already know this however remember the wood piece at each
end of the 'handle iron under frame', originally had a piece of fairly thick felting type material glued on to help prevent the scuttle panel under the windscreen stanchion/bracket being distorted inward when the bolts in this area were tightened up i.e.. the felting is placed between the inside of the front quarter panel and the wood piece.

I have seen some restorers in despair when they re fit up the windscreen brackets and a resultant inward compression of the panel occurs !!!

Thanks Rick and Rob. I had no idea about the felt. George

You can just barely see the felt between the scuttle and the flat bar that supports the mirror.

I hope these helped with your inquiry.
