MG TD TF 1500 - TF Dashboard Colour

Have just removed all the instruments & chrome bezels on my dashboard to repaint. On all the cars I've looked at the gold colour is a more muted gold colour. When I removed the chrome bezel from the ignition the original gold colour was a far brighter gold than on any of the dashes viewed. More of a high carat yellow gold colour. So where to next - follow the excepted premixed colour cans that are sold as the original match or have colour matched to my dash? Think I will go with my original colour sample that has been protected under the bezel for 62 years.

Cant argue with your logic John.
Attached a photo of my instrument panel which will have faded a little since the car was built.
Can you capture a photo showing the unfaded paint?

Cheers,
Matthew.

I would be very careful thinking that the paint is the same color as when originally painted. Obviously lots of rust and deterioration underneath, which is going to change the color. Unless the paint (or any paint) was stored in a dry nitrogen filled container in the dark it would likely not be the same hue years later.

GMH 'Cognac' (1974) paint is very similar to those TF instrument panel colours.
In fact looks a dead ringer to your colour exihited John. Matt. quite rightly indicates that his TF1500 panel may be slightly lighter due to fade.

All good advice John. I'd also check out Chris Couper's Original MG TF site for yet another opinion. A visit to the gallery there showing images of original cars should also help you. Cheers

This is what I found on a steering wheel center cap.

L E D LaVerne

It is darker than the Color that Moss supplied for years but matches the color on untouched dash panels I have seen.

Kind of a moot point on the Moss paint as it is no longer available, but I do believe it was not dark enough to be a correct match.

I simply took my centre panel and the red surround to Halfords - a UK motor accessory chain - looked at their range of aerosols and found a sand and a red for about £10. Far, far cheaper than getting a paint supplier to mix up ones for you and I could have gone back for more if I had needed it.. As always I should have checked which cars they were for but didn't.

My car is finished in water based paint and I did have some in storage but unfortunately it set in the tin. I needed some to touch in a couple of stone chips and luckily the car had been painted in a current Toyota colour that was a good match to the original red so I was able to purchase an aerosol and touch up pencil for a few pounds. Again Halfords had them on the shelf.

John, I bought a spray can of Gold paint from one of the 'cheap' shops. If you wanted Gold you would be disappointed, but the panel on my TF looks as close to the original colour as my eyes can tell.
