MG TD TF 1500 - TF dashboard light wiring

Dear folks,

The TF schematic shows 9 total dashboard lights:
ignition warning
petrol warning
direction indicator
speedometer
tri-gauge
tachometer
hi beam
2 map lights

But, there are only 7 light holes in the panel (photo).

continued.

Tyler Irwin

Tyler,
The two map lights are not on the dash the go under the curved dash scuttle.

For the last item, two red/green wires that come off the dashboard pig tail harness (photo) are for the two separate map lights. Where are these 2 map lamps located on the car?

And, see the two red/white wires on the left side of photo? Are they wired together to the center (tri-gauge) lamp?

Thanks for your help.

Tyler

Tyler Irwin

Tyler, the map lights are under the dash rail, one being above and in the centre of the grab handle, the other in the same position on the other side. If you need a photo let me know.

Tyler,

The WIRING to the two(2) map lights on TFs is held up, and out of view, under the scuttle flange via four(4) open( half) loop brackets which are affixed to the bolts holding the crash pad.

These four 'open' clips are often missing on restored TFs.

Rob
Do you have a picture of the clips installed on the car?
Thanks

The car came with a home-made wiring harness, lacking these 2 dash lamps. Always wondered what the loop brackets were under the dash pad. Guess I'll need about 3 more bulb fixtures.

Thanks Matthew for the photo. I would greatly appreciate more photos from anyone.

thanks,

Rick,

I have restored the TF1500s Crash Pad with wooden base as I am
completing the bodywork in the near future. As such it is not fitted to the car. I will endeavour to upload a photo in the next day or so. The clips are on the base studs ready for use.

The current TF 1250( "Aramis") has the clips in position also. Will try and get a shot of them.

Matthew M will also probably be able to photo his clips in position on his very original TF1500.

Tyler,

Just to clarify our discussion- there are only two(2) bulb holders(for a total of 2 lights) under the dash, however there were four(4) wiring clips holding up the wiring lines out of sight.

Thanks everyone,
Some photos of the "clips" in place sure would be handy if anyone has some.

Much appreciated.

See Kimber's Revenge in archive. It covers the dash pad fasteners and wire clips. Regards John

Actually photographed a part of my car that I have never laid eyes on. I knew I saved that sliver of mirror for a reason. Looks like an open clip with a C section going under the nut. All 4 are the same. Are yours like this Rob?

Matthew.

M Magilton

Hi Matt.,

Exactly spot on photo of the said wiring half clip. There are four(4) 'open' clips in total. I expect you now to include these items in your next Concours TF Judging schedule !!

You have saved me having to photograph my clips which I had to fabricate for both cars. A friend and TF enthusiast here in Perth had
the original clips in his quite original TF before restoration so I borrowed and simply copied same.

Looks like I should now paint my TF1500 Dash wiring clips black !

Thanks for the follow up Matt.

Cheers

The lamps are standard British issue from the 50s and were fitted to a range of cars. I got some for my TF from a scrap Austin A35 and Morris Minors also use them. But beware there are two types. One has a single wire and earths through the metal claws. The other has two wires, one earth and one live. You will need one of the latter for the ignition warning lamp.

Matthew, thank goodness the upside down eerie head in your first photo didn't re-appear in the second, but we all know that apparitions don't appear in mirrors! (that's no reflection on your photo taking abilities)

I found four of those clips in the parts bin after I rebuilt my car. I remember being dissatisfied with the wiring to the map lights and how it could hang down. Now I know where they came from and have work out how to fit them retrospectively.

I will have to talk our club into ordering a bulk supply of dental mirrors for issue to the judges!

Matt.,

At our Club Concours early next year,I intend to use an eye magnifying glass and a slide caliper gauge to check the T types finishes and gap accuracies.( lol) Just joking !!

Does anyone have a good photo of these wire clamps before attaching them?
thanks,

Sorry, here is a more complete reply:

Jan,
I might be able to salvage the 2-pole lamp fixture (don't know if new ones are available). I believe it fits into the center of the triple-gauge, doesn't it?

Does anyone have a good photo of the map wire clamps before attaching them? Maybe I can find a close substitute.
thanks,

Here is a photo I copied years ago from the Archives. The dash clips are marked "A". Don't remember who posted it. John

JR Mahone

Tyler,

I suspect Clip 'B' in the photo supplied by JR Mahone is the one needed.

If you can't work your old center light I might have a spare in my bin Tyler. Same goes for the map lights. For what its'; worth I don't have the wire clips on my car. They weren't on Bill's TF either. I'll have to have a look and see if they are on the TF I'm supposed to be working on.
L E D LaVerne

Rob and LaVerne,
Thanks for the tips. I ended up making a set (photo- not quite finished yet).
