MG TD TF 1500 - TF fuel tank stuck in place

I followed instructions in the TD/TF WSM Section B14 for removing the fuel tank from my TF.

I'm down to the last step: "... lift out the tank." But it doesn't budge. My guess is that the rubber pads have fused themselves to the tank and supporting parts.

Any suggestions on how to release the bond? Is the problem caused by something else? Did I miss any fasteners?

Thanks,

I'd go along with that Lonnie. Less likely, but is it possible that the top of the tank may have rusted against the tub skin & be adhering there? My tank had clearly rusted out at some point prior to my ownership right along the top where it abuts the tub, probably because of debris that settles, composts & ultimately rusts. It had been soldered up in a number of spots as I discovered when I was prepping it for paint. Cheers

Hi Peter -

Don't think rust is the problem.

The car was restored about 30 years ago and has been babied ever since. It's in really good shape except for the paint.

Anybody else had the problem? How did you remove the tank?

Thanks,

As long as the two straps were removed all that's left is the two pads in lower front and the two small pads on the bottom outside ends. They do get stuck so yank away carefully by pulling back at the top edge.
Don't forget the fuel line and gauge wiring..

Lonnie I have had my tank in an out a few times over the years it can get quite caught on the bottom pads. There is a metal piece protruding from the tank on either side that presses up against the pads. You should try wiggling it from side to side. Try also pulling it forward to you while you stand at the rear of the car to break and contact between the tank and the rubbers it sits against that are attached to the tub. Fuel hose and both straps must also be disconnected.
Good luck

OK - I'm a sissy.

I showed another TF owner my stuck fuel tank today and pulled on it to show how frozen-in-place it is. Musta pulled harder than I did yesterday. It came loose from the rubber that was holding it in place.

Thanks for your help. Everyone was right.
