MG TD TF 1500 - TF Ouch

Anyone here?

David Littlefield

Not pretty at all !!!

Ouch is right... there but for the grace of God go all of us. Looks like a tree fell on it, no?

Don't know what happened. It was spotted in a tow yard in Connecticut with NY plates. The theory in the other forum where the pictures were posted was that it rolled off a trailer based on a closeup of a broken cable attached to the tow strap. The OP says it still smells of new paint, so may have been a fresh restoration. It's a TF 1500, too.

Lousy luck. Looks like the wood frame may be OK, but I wouldn't bet on it. Apart from that there's hardly a visible panel that's usable. Probably a big insurance argument going on between the owner and the carrier, unless the owner hired the trailer.

Way back I helped a friend rebuild a Tiger Moth (WW2 RAF training bi-plane). When it was finished he was towing it from Auckland to Rotorua for final assembly and test flight, when the tow ball came off the bracket. The thing rolled into a ditch, trailer and all, and we didn't get to reuse too much structure. About a year later we'd finished the repairs and I got to do the assembly and test flying - still in Rotorua, but we made very sure the next tow setup was solid.

Birch Grey 1500 with Lucas spots, just like mine. That's my nightmare right there.

Most of the frame will be firewood.

Matthew.

Yes. NEMGTR members on their way to GOF 101 in Nova Scotia. Fortunately, no injuries. Premier winning TF 1500. Beautiful car, wonderful people. Very tragic.
They were able to rent a car and continue on to the GOF, where they had a wonderful time. I last spoke with them a few hours ago
Be well,
David

Tow vehicle involved in an accident, went against guard rail, trailer hitch and safety chains broke. The trailer flipped over and the TF broke loose. Tow vehicle continued through the opposite guardrail and down an embankment. The trailer went under the TF as it rolled over. It landed on its wheels, with the trailer under the rear end. Trailer and tow vehicle both very totaled. Fortunately, they walked away. The safety systems and airbags worked.
Be well,
David

Davis Provan,

That wasn't Brian Edwards with the Tiger Moth, was it? If so, please get in touch with me.

Landed so hard it knocked the reflectors down on the fenders. :-)

What other forum was this mentioned in?
D. Sander

Lew, it was Ian Bennie's aircraft. However, Ian did take that Tiger to the USA once he got his pilot's licence and I think it may have ended up there.

Registration was ZK_CZX. I can send you a photo if you want it.

Good to know no one was injured. Sad about the car. It was mentioned in the Grassroots Motorsports forum. One of the members there spotted it and took the pictures.

David,
No. Wrong person. A Brian Edwards was a 1960s owner of my PA. He was a student at the DeHavilland Aeronautical Technical Institute at the time. (Strangely, I also own a PB Airline Coupe which was owned by Brian's roommate at DeHavilland.)
Another Brian Edwards once restored and flew a Tiger Moth solo from England to Australia where I think it still resides. But I am still trying to find the Brian Edwards that used to own my PA.

Cheers,
Lew
