MG TD TF 1500 - TF rear bumper bracket thread.

Could someone please tell me the size of the rear bumper bracket bolts, I thought they were the same as the front 7/16th BSF (I think)
The car won't be finished for the All British Day on Feb 14th but I want to do as much as possible.
The doors and side panels should be painted by then.
I want to fit the rear bumper assembly so I can mount my number plate South Australia RMG 054.

Don
For your info the front & rear bolts are both 7/16 BSF
Rear bolts are 3" overall and use the aluminium spacers, front bolts 2 1/8" overall useng a smaller spacer.
I had to get new bolts from LBCco.
I am currently restoring TF4571 & at about the same stage as yourself, regards chris bennett

Dont be surprised to find the threads are compromised in the chassis rails. I had to "helicoil" mine and used metric bolts.

Also so the front tyres would not scrub on the bumper when on full lock I had to pack the brackets out a considerable distance.

Thanks Chris, I've tried to put the 7/16th BSF bolts from the front but they are very tight, I might have to run a tap in the holes.
Your car is about 2 weeks older than mine.
Are you going to the ABD ?

And thanks G. I thought the larger of the spacers went to the front brackets, that's how they were when I pulled the car apart.

The threads on mine are tight as well, I have 1 original "Newton" bolt & 3 new ones, I have not fitted the bumpers as yet so will probably have to check the threads as well. Our TF won't be on the road for at least 3 months, only bought it April 2015 in a semi restored, dismantled condition so I have been sourcing parts from USA, UK & Canada to complete the resto.
Autumn Red paint, red interior & black tonneau & roof. We got the seats back from trimmer last weekend, very happy with the job & now starting to fit the trim, fit side curtain box & floors. At this stage I am working on the 14th All British Day, so may not be able to get to it.

Don,

The front TF bumper bracket spacers are only 1/2" or so in section.
They are also a much smaller diameter compared to the rears.

The front spacers were originally steel, whereas the longer ,larger diameter rears were in cast aluminium. The front spacers were painted black. i suspect the rears were painted in black also, although there is some conjecture on that point.

I seem to remember having to carefully drill,(using progressively larger diameter drills) out one of the rusted in rear bolts. I was fortunate to use a dental pick in the last act to unfurl the remaining shell of the original bolt eventually, thereby preserving the BSF thread hole.

I often wonder why the longer spacers are erroneously employed on the front bumper bracket ie. to give extra 'clearance'. Assume the chassis frame is standard to specs.

Cheers.
