MG TD TF 1500 - TF Tank Strap Bolts
Wondering if someone might be able to point me to a supplier for these bolts? (Attached pic) I purchased a set from Moss and received hex head bolts. That's not going to work unless I have no choice. I need three. I got only one with the car. Thanks, Dan ![]() |

Hi Dan, Some will say that in some cases hex head bolts were used here. However,I have never seen this type of bolt on TFs !! In my experience, they have always been the Phillips Head type. I don't think the bolts are available from the usual MG suppliers. Hoevever, they would be relatively easy to make. A good whack with a suitably sized PH screwdriver on a heated up bolt head works wonders! Cheers Rob Grantham TF3719("Aramis"),TF9177("Athos"). |

Dan Go to the archive and type in "TF Fuel Tank Top Strap Bolts" for a discussion and source... Wealth of info in the archive |

R Brown, I sent an email to Rod. Hopefully he still has four. Great find! Thank you, Dan |

Rob, I will give that a try if I can't find any. Thanks for the idea. Dan |

What number is your TF? It seems early TF's did use hex bolts and as production progressed, phillips head were used. Then of course, as we know with these cars with supply shortages, they used what was available at Abingdon to finish production. GOF in NY a couple years back that hosted the TF Survivor series had a few TF's with hex bolts. All were early TF's. These are from TF #1414 original bolts first time removed for restoration since Nov 1953. There is discussion in the archives on this subject. You can go either way since both were used. Frank PS. an update since it has been a while I've posted on the forum but to announce pretty soon the TF will be painted-- In grey of course....... :) ![]() |

Hi Frank TF 1500 #7946 w/XPEG 1749 The bolt in my original post is an original. I still have the four acorn nuts, but the bolts and washers were misplaced by the PO. Thinks he will find them --- someday. Dan |

Dan, Go the phillips head route and return the hex to Moss. Contact Abingdon Spares and ask if they have PH style bolts. They all get painted the same color of the interior. |

Phillips fasteners were still gaining ascendancy during TF production. Another example would be flat-drive screws for early door hinge screws and Phillips for later hinges. Matthew. |

I got my new ones from Rod after he made a few up. My TF is a late one and the original bolts were Phillips head. I was told all TFs had Phillips head bolts for the upper tank strap brackets, but possibly the very early ones had the hex bolts as the TDs did. PJ |

My TF is an early one made in 1953 and has the same original "BEES" brand bolts that Frank's car has. |

Dan, There's 4 of them on their way. PJ |

You don't mess around, that's for sure. Thank you. Did you have to float them out. :) Dan |

No, were fortunate as we set high and dry and we have no fear of flooding. Oh, I forgot, our Pony Express post office closes at 4 O'clock, so they'll be in the mail tomorrow morning. PJ |

My TF XPEG 703 was built August 25,1954 and had the same hex bolts as in Franks photo. I never liked the original practice of painted bolts so I used Ace Hardware stainless Phillips bolts and chrome acorn nuts. Not original but I like the look and it was an inexpensive solution. Only negative is the acorn nut profile is not like the original (the nut in the middle is the original). Best regards, John

Paul, Received your bolts today and they are just what I was looking for. They will do the job quite nicely. Thank you, Dan TF7946 |

Put M8 Pozi pan head stainless bolts into eBay. A set of 4 x 2.5" long £2.45. Jan t |

Jan, Those certainly look correct, but aren't originals BSF? |
Daniel Nordstrom |
Hi Daniel, Yes they are but who will know apart from you an me! I have used stainless metric fasteners in a number of places and I think they look better than some of the flat head slotted screws I have seen on some cars. Jan ![]() |
J Targosz |
Yes Jan, I would agree with you if I were doing a complete restoration, but since my car has so much of its original parts and pieces with only one repaint a new hood and a seat replacement, I thought I would make every reasonable effort to keep it that way. And since I have the four original acorn nuts it just makes sense to use originals if available. Thanks to Paul Jennings I was able to accomplish this. Now what I need is some very nice, but used, bright red leather seat upholstery. Got some? Thanks for the info though. Dan |

I purchased TF 1721, mfg Dec. 1953, early in 1973. The car had been resprayed, but not disassembled as far as I could tell. My bolts were hex head as Frank's survivor TF 2217. Gary |
