MG TD TF 1500 - TF windscreen glass

My TF windscreen glass has lost more than one battle with flying rocks. I have kept it because it is original and has the engraving/etching from the original supplier. Of course, since the glass is flat, a modern piece of laminated glass would solve the issues. I would rather find an original piece in good condition. So if anyone has a piece in good condition they would not mind selling, please speak up.

Brett, can you take a pic or two of the original etching & post it here? I'm keen to compare the American & Australian images. I do have samples of both but am always interested in original examples. Cheers

I think Lew Palmer still has the kit for sale to etch the windshield
TRM Maine

Yes I do. If interested email lew (at) roundaboutmanor (dot) com. $50 for the full kit.

bew: can you post or send me a picture of your etching?
Christopher Couper

Christopher,

I have been wanting to get a photo of my etching for quite sometime, but could not figure out how to do it. Finally after about 20 shots I was able to produce this.

I believe my car to have most of its original parts.

Looking at the attached, would you agree?

Thanks, Dan

not trying to steal the post.

That's a great picture. I took have had trouble taking a photo of the etching. What was your secret for success?

Also can you give me your car number and build date, if you know it, otherwise I can look it up?
Christopher Couper

Sure. This is the logo for the TD and TF. The only difference between them is the year code. I do them for 49 through 55.

Pardon the SAMPLE overprint and blurring, but I have too many hours into the design to not protect my effort.

I also do the pre-war Triplex Toughened logo, which is just the small 1/2" circle with TRIPLEX TOUGHENED surrounding the circle.

Christopher,

After several attempts I settled on the use of a black binder held over the top of the windscreen with minimal lighting. I guess the camera flash was just enough. Although even this method took about four shots to work.

Built November 1954. The eleventh, I think.

So do you believe this to be the original?

Thanks, Dan

Dan would you say the I in TRIPLEX is the same as in ASI? Yours is the clearest image I have seen of what appears to be an original TF logo, particularly so of the letters above the word TRIPLEX. I have never been sure whether it read AS1 or ASI. Interesting to note the dot above the X on your 54 glass. This differs from the quarterly dating method used on the TD. Also can you tell me where the logo is on your screen & whether the pic was taken from the front or from inside the car? It appears to be from the front, (low down?) on the driver's side. Presumably you have a LHD.

Apologies Brett for taking this thread further from your original request. I do suspect however that finding an original screen would be extremely difficult which is probably why no one has offered. Obtaining one in as good as or better condition than yours would be almost impossible. I think new glass with the correct logo in the correct place would be your best bet. In terms of further refining just exactly what that correct logo is & where it is placed, this has been a useful thread. I'd love to see a pic of your logo to add to my collection. Cheers

Peter,

Yes, the lettering in ASI and TRIPLEX are an exact match.
The picture was taken from the inside of the car looking out. The logo is located in the upper right hand corner of the screen approximately 1" down from the top.

Based on the appearance and condition of most everything else on this car I feel confident this glass is original to the car. If it was replaced it was done so with original parts. Hopefully someone can confirm with the date code. Even the wipers appear to be original. All worn and rotted, but still on the car. lol

Took it on its maiden flight yesterday. First time on the road in 43 years.

Thanks Dan. Yours is the second North American car I'm aware of whose screen carries the ASI TRIPLEX logo, the other is a TD. This logo was used exclusively on cars that were exported to Australia & appeared as you describe near the top of the glass on the passenger side. The more commonly found logo on North American cars is the one Lew describes, the ASWS. It seems quite likely that an ASI TRIPLEX screen if fitted to an American car at the factory, (presumably for reasons of availability), would simply be installed in reverse ensuring that the logo remained on the passenger side. This would make the logo readable from the inside of the car, as opposed to from the outside, as is the case with the original ASI TRIPLEX screens I've seen here. I agree with you in your belief that your screen is almost certainly original. I can't shed any light on the TF dating method, (Lew?) however I'm certain the dot above the X in the word TRIPLEX on your screen holds the key to the month of manufacture of your glass in 1954. Thanks again for the information. Cheers

I understand that having that original marking is very nice. On the other had, having new windscreen glass is like having a new car. Clean and bright!

I vote for new glass.
