MG TD TF 1500 - TF wire wheel brake drum nut torque
Restoring a '54 TF and need to know proper torque for the 6 small nuts that hold the brake drums to the wire wheel hubs. I've found nothing on the web to help. Torque charts for the TD / TF are almost non-existant and sure don't cover all pertinent fasteners. Thanks in advance for your help. Jerry |

These are only thin nuts, I would go "firm" and no more. The drum aint going anywhere. Just mho. Matthew. |

The factory TF parts manual and the Moss catalogue show tab washers for these nuts. I bet most cars are missing them (mine is). With these washers in place the nuts do not need to be very tight. As Matthew suggests the thin nuts will strip easily. |

Roger that gentlemen. I still have the OEM tabbed retainers and knew 'good and snug' was probably OK. I suffer from being a mechanical engineer and like to do things right. Being sure all the fasteners are equally tight ensures not drum or hub distortion and that's what I was after. I'll just pick my own 'good and tight' torque. I'm amazed at how few torque specs exist for these old gems. Jerry |

Jerry, you might want to take a look at http://www.ttalk.info/Fasteners.htm Not all are covered, but a pretty good bit. Bud |

I put new tab washers on mine and "Torqued" the bolts with a 12 inch long box wrench/spanner. Their going no where, but, if there is a torque spec, you might want to use it for ease of mind. PJ |

I used the "gootntite' method with a long box end wrench and agree they're not going to fall off. Just thought I should check the brain trust for any info I might be missing. Thanks again. Jerry |
