MG TD TF 1500 - TF2250 first time start after rebuild

I rebuilt the engine about a year ago, but only just got around to starting it, after doing everything else. I now have an almost complete car (minus seats and carpets).. It took me a week to get oil pressure (no messing with Vaseline in the pump), until I learned the trick of pumping oil in with a modified garden sprayer, and made sure everything was leak tight, which is even more important. Some delay also from a leaky carb. Anyway it started perfectly as soon as I turned the ignition key and pulled the starter. A bit of smoke to start with, but that's as usual. The oil pressure gauge indicates about 60psi at approx 2000rpm (which is a guess until I get a new tacho cable). Reset valve clearances to 16thou, and now need to adjust the carbs. Ignition at 10degr BTDC for starters. +0.080 on the bore giving 1330cc, no supercharger or roller cam followers, but done most other things to improve performance. Still using original con rods and crank (must be a replacement as STD size and did not need grinding), which crack tested as good. Anyway, its a runner!

Good stuff Dave. I'm curious about the "pumping oil in" bit. Where & how?. I want to make sure I have good pressure before I kick her over. Any chance of a pic or 2? Cheers

Thanks all.
Peter, the garden sprayer was a green platic cheapie from B&Q. The clear flexible tube has a bush pushed into the end, which needs to be levered out. I connected to the oil system at the brass fitting that connects to the capillary for the oil pressure gauge. During the rebuild I used a new reinforced flexible between the engine and the brass fitting. The old one I dismantled so that I could insert the end fitting into the end of the clear flexible tube on the sprayer. Secured with a jubilee clip. Fill the pressure vessel with the required amount of oil, connect up and pump away. The pressure soon forces all that oil into every recess of the oil system. Not my idea - I got it from this forum, and just adapted a readily available sprayer to it.
