MG TD TF 1500 - TF5135 on the road again.

After a summer of work on the car she's back on the road after 20 years "rest". I'm not used to TF's and she's surprising me by how capable she is in all departments. Holds the road well, tracks true and steers well. Purrs like a pussy-cat,growls like a tiger and looks magnificent. Whoopee! It's great re-learning the technique of getting the best out of a little engine and manual gearbox - real driving. Engine temp steady at 84c, oil pressure (hot) 25 idle and 40 above 2500 rpm. Seemed a tad rich in the shop but needs choke for cold start and has clean exhaust, starts first touch hot. Occasional crunch on gearchange is driver error. Clocked 306 miles so far - loves cruising at 3800 rpm and handled 6 miles at 4000+ without flinching - one short run at 4500. Seems to get smoother the faster I push her. Early days yet of course but so far so very good. This is 3rd attempt to post - got lost adding pic - hope this one works! Malcolm.

Congrats! Can you post a pic? Cheers

You’ve got me going green with envy! I am still about a year away from driving, can’t wait to see the pics.

Hi Peter and Chris - pics failed this time too, but at least my post came up. Doing more research on posting pics, can't find any info on the site. Don't know if there are limits on size/number etc. Cheers mates, Malcolm.

Mal
Congratulation on getting the TF back on the road.

There is a size limit to photos, so use a photo editing program to reduce their size, then try attaching them to a post. If they do not upload below the comments box, they are too large.

cheers

Mal, I'm not sure of the specifics, but I think the size limit is about 1MB and the format must be jpeg (.jpg). Bud

I think the software on the website does that for you, I've never had to mess about with mine.

...and again...

At last - but unclear how I did it - uploaded several times successfully but wouldn't submit. Noticed heading after "success uploading" was Triumph (!) BBS...no idea how that happened -off to look at Triumph! Took me all morning trying and the sun's shining so this daft old goat is off to play with his car. Thanks all for kind comments. Malcolm

Nice looking car, mine is the same color.

Nice car.
TRM Maine

Beautiful car. I have added you to the Jeff Payne TF list.
Rick

Congratulations, Malcolm! Looks very nice and it looks like you've got it tuned up well.

Here's wishing you many, many happy miles.

Mgrogan - LOL, my lady friend nearly wet herself laughing!
Bud, format is jpg - size is ok - problem is my ineptitude with computers. I'm working on it...
Peter - you have a beauty - love the colour, LOL
You''ve done a lot more on yours than I have - read your posts with interest, thanks. Over the summer I've re-built the entire braking system,,fuel system incl. tank and carbs, electrics and gauges, and spent three weeks getting doors and locks to fit and function to my satisfaction - I'm an old man with a lousy productivity rate and perhaps an over-critical eye...
TRM thanks.
Rick, excuse my ignorance, but what's the Jeff Payne TF list? (I feel honoured here) - big thank you. BTW "Rebecca" - name inherited from my father's first car an Austin 7 Ruby circa 1945 is a matching numbers car that's pretty original except for bonnet louvres and some chrome in the engine room and it left the factory painted black - oh and black interior isn't original - however it's nicely done. Whoever did the louvres did a very nice job of it and was obviously giving thought to airflow/cooling issues - he replaced the under wing louvred panels with blanks. It seems to work , engine temps are rock steady at 84c whatever the revs/load .(ambient temps only 50's however...)
Bobby, thanks - I spent a fair amount of time tuning - thought it was running a tad rich in the shop and I'm set as lean as I can go at this fuel level - keeping an eye on mixture - want to drive right now before weather really clamps down. Did another 45 miles today!

Rick, see http://www.ttalk.info/car_lists.htm Bud

My feeling is that list is missing a whole lot of UK registered cars, as there are just a very few on there. Mine is on the MG TType register list, but not that list.

Now that you have her back on the road get yourself some of this, I had a 4 pack the night I got my NY registration completed. I recently got a 6 pack to mark the end of the driving season.

It was a busy 8 months from arrival from Australia to legally driving in the USA.

Now that winter is upon us I have lots of "make busy" to get the car ready for next season.

Peter

PS. I edited the picture at http://picresize.com, a free service.

Hi Peter, at the end of a day/evening's work on the car I usually yell "up spirits" on my way into the house (old Royal Navy call I believe - I'm actually ex RAF). I like the occasional dark beer but my standard tipple is Scotch, heavily diluted with ginger ale. Next 3 days here mid to high 60's and sunny - so more driving in mind.Currently at 360 miles since launch and all good. When weather eventually clamps down I've plenty minor issues to deal with and will start renewing suspension/steering bushings and checking shocks more thoroughly.
Pity you're so far away (I'm in mid Arkansas) - I'd love to get together with other TD/TF owners and exchange notes, compare cars - even maybe swap drives to establish some sort of yardstick or norm to go by. You must feel the cold in NY after Oz ! Cheers, Malcolm.
M Smedley

I am ex-RAAF, 16 years, before getting into civil aviation for 28 years of fun.

I am a beer guy, actually have a kegerator to reduce amount of travel to the store.
