MG TD TF 1500 - Tire Rotation

I started to do a tire rotation yesterday and it made me think. Must be getting old I guess.. :)
Making a chart to stick on the wall took way too long.
This is what I came up with
See any flaws?
Figured I'd do this every Jan now. Along with the Oil and filter change regardless of mileage.

I stick the spare on the right front, figuring I make more right turns than left. On one TD I have a Dunlop 5.50x15 as a spare, so then I just rotate the 4 tires crosswise.

If you are making a preponderance of right turns would that not result in more wear to the left side tires, especially front, where the weight shifts to?

I've found that most classic cars don't drive enough miles, or use soft enough tires, to warrant rotating at all. And the cars are so light that they aren't very hard on them. Nothing wrong with doing it, but I haven't found any advantage unless it's driven very hard or a ton of miles.

I always understood radials should never change direction of rotation. Front to back and Vv on same side.

50 years of radials, never hear anything different.

I have to concur with Peter. When I bought my "modern" TF it had only done 7000 miles and had be stored since 2008. I decided to repaint the wheels and took them one at a time to a local tyre fitter for the tyres to be removed so I could do a proper job. The fitter had a hard time first breaking the bead and then removing the tyre. The problem was the rubber had hardened and lost its flexibility. I didn't know that tyres are date stamped and mine whilst looking virtually new had been made in 2004. I this bought a new set and the fitter pointed out to me arrows on the side walls which show the direction of rotation. He said that if you want to swop tyres from side to side you should remove them from their wheels and turn them round on the rims.

I had a terrible time getting good wheel balancing when I installed the new tires last year. Finally solve it by finding a shop that could balance the tires in position, on the car. Not likely to do any more rotating. Bud

Here's a pretty extensive article on tire rotation. the Tire and Rim Association doesn't seem to be concerned with radials changing direction.

There are tires that are directional especially the better snow tires. look for the arrow on the sidewall. Tire Rack will say "directional" in a tire's listing.

I agree with Steve, the tires will “time out” before there is enough wear to consider tire rotation schedules.
