MG TD TF 1500 - Tires for my TF

The wire wheels on my TF are authentic Dunlop wheels, that I purchased separately, and have a 4½ rim.

Does anyone believe that the 175/70 R 15 from Hancook is too wide? Vredenstein make a similar tire.

I haven't bought tires for a few years now, but it seems to me that choices are becoming limited.

165/80x15, used internet the old VWs.

They are out there.

175 could be too wide for the spare wheel to be mounted satisfactorily.

Here is a ' Tire Calculator ' that gives good information Size Comparisons.

https://www.tacomaworld.com/tirecalc?tires=140-80r15-165-80r15

Just plug in the size you want to compare. I used a width of 140mm as 5.5", as 5.5" = 139.7mm.

On Tire Racks site, they list the Vrederstein 175/70/15. Under the ' SPECS ' Tab, Rim Width for that tire is listed at 4.5" to 6".

And here is the recommendations from Longstone Tyres in the UK.

Vrederstein are nice Tires...but are a Summer Compound and should not be flexed below around 42 degrees F.

I'm a Michelin guy. Good deal on 5 new tires and Michelin tubes to be had from Longstone Tyres out on the UK 165R 15

I like, and use, Michelins on some of my cars as well. But the only trouble is they wear so well they last 3 times the allowed 10 year use by date. And tire shops won't so much put air in a tire or balance it if over 10 years old. I refuse to throw a tire away with 85% tread on it and no signs of sidewall cracking having always been parked in a garage. Let the arguments commence.

Might be worth having a spare set that are in date.

Insurance companies look for reasons to not pay claims, tires past use-by-date would be a good way to deny a claim.

A set of 5 tires cost $500 installed and are the only thing linking the vehicle to the road, I will be using current tires on mine, but each to their own.

I just took delivery on a set of 5 165/15 Michelin XZX tires from Coker for my TD restoration.

I looked at a lot of tires and talked to a lot of TD folks.

Michelin had a $70 promotion that helped my decision.

The price for the Michelin's and the Vrederstein's are about the same.

I am old school.

I really sweated over those Chris. They truly look like the originals. While I am going for originality on my TD, I wanted to stay with radial tires.

Many thanks for all your inputs. The Michelins aren't in the cards. Remarks about the insurance companies are interesting ... never thought of that.

I'll starr the season with what I have.
