MG TD TF 1500 - tonneau cover

My car is a 1950 TD. I finally got to see how the tonneau bar works with the tonneau cover this weekend. But, it was an OEM (canvas) half tonneau. I've got a repro full tonneau. It doesn't seem to want to tuck behind the bar very well. Is it operator error or will it fold in there as neatly as a half tonneau?

Thanks
Bruce Haynes

Hi Bruce,
The TDs did not have a full tonneau cover in the 50s. Only the half tonneau cover was available, therefore the bar behind the seat.
I recently bought a new full tonneau cover that folds nicely without the help of a bar.

It also depends on how far forward the lift-a-dot snaps are by the curve above and behind behind the door. They are often pretty far forward, so the cover tends to stretch forward in a V, and not look very good.

I had a full cover once with short zippers that allowed it to be tucked into the bar. Basically a PITA so I never did it. Looked better just tucked under and resting on the top lip of the seat back IMHO.

My full tonneau tucks in nicely behind the bar and is fixed with Velcro but it is a home made bar and brackets to allow for this.

Thanks for the help! I'm going to shim out the OEM bar to give it more room (like the one Declan made). Hopefully the lift-a-dot snaps are positioned rearward enough to allow it to fold neatly. If not, it can lay across the seat back.

Thanks again.

That is a nicely tucked tonneau. Very nice. Who made it? My Moss full tonneau is not that neat.

Tom,
It was made by a local trimmer and he did an excellent job. The material I chose is called "Sonnenland" which is the same as what BMW and Audi use on their convertibles. I think I paid him 170 Euro which was very reasonable. He also made the seat covers which are full leather-no leatherette-I know it is not original.
