MG TD TF 1500 - Top and side screens

I saw many pictures of front corners for soft top fittings.
But the top flaps come over the front side screen. That's a good waterproof concept.
But,getting into the car, you need to first close the door and then tie down the front bow to the windshield pillar.
Do you confirm ?

Reverse when you want to get out of the car ?

The front bow remains attached to the windscreen at all times. When I get in and close the door I reach out of the flap and run my finger between the side curtain and the double lip of the top.
In the old enclosed photo you can see that my side curtain was sitting a little low and was a little bent from storage.

Laurent,
Here is another useful attachment I learned about from this BBS.
When on the road the top will billow up and upset the seal between the side curtain and the top.
Here are some photos of the snaps I put on that hold it in place.

Very clever, Mort. Must look into that. Bud

I use velcro there. Also in place of the button snaps that hold the side curtains to the door panels and in place of the button snap that secures the side curtain storage lid. Works much better with vintage arthritic hands.

Bud,
If I remember correctly I got the idea from a post from LaVern about five years ago. He used one snap but I added a second just for insurance and it holds the top-down very well.

Mort,
Where did you purchase your rear vision from?

Magnets sewn in work, too.

No holes drilled into thin frame to weaken it or void warranty on top frame!

I have been investigating suppliers of external mirrors for my Y Tourer and TD. I like the idea of the mirror stem attaching through the windscreen support as per Morts first photo.

The mirror itself is the same as the central rearview mirror.

You can get them from Holden and NTG in UK or Moss, FTFU and LBCC in US and of course MG Spares/ Heritage Sydney (but they are very expensive).

The mirrors come with either screws in the back (as per Morts photo) or screws in the top & bottom (cheaper adn more original I think). You can also get them with "King of the Road" emblems.

I am going with NTG (MGbits.com) combined mirror and stem (Mirror with screws on top/bottom). (NTGC836 for around $130Au plus shipping - a lot better than $361 from Heritage in Sydney.

Off thread I know but Stuart $361 is wounded bull territory! It's a great pity we don't have an outlet here such as FTFU, or any of the better quality suppliers with their parts that look right, actually fit for purpose & are available at reasonable prices. After all we were the 2nd largest market for T Types. It's really frustrating to buy something from the retailer in the States, pay the considerable shipping costs, discover that it is unacceptable, again pay to send it back & hope that they get it right the next time around. I know I'm not alone in this.

I do like Jim's idea of the magnets though. Cheers

I find the SVC mirrors quite good and at £55 they are not too expensive.

There is always this option:

Stuart,
The side view mirror brackets that I have go through the slot in the windshield bracket. You have to remove the side view mirrors to lower the windshield. I bought these brackets for a TC thinking that I could replace the ones I have. They would not work for me because the mirror was situated too low for my vision.
I am not sure of the configuration of the Y but if you can use them I can send you the set. Moss lists them for $139.99 each. You can have them both for $75 plus shipping.

Delcan, thank you for the link, but I prefer not to drill into the windscreen supports.

Mort, thank you for your offer, but I prefer the mirror brackets that go through the slot in the windscreen brackets. The same as you have. Due to the amount of either sunshine (and the likely hood of skin cancer) or rain here on the Gold Coast, I intend to run the YT with the windscreen and the hood up and the rear window unzipped.

My TD is awhile off being on the road, so I will see how the mirrors go on the YT.

cheers

Stuart,
No drilling involved!-just a simple bracket.
Rubber seals so as not to damage the chrome and a stainless steel spacer on the lower bolt.

The thread was about top and side screens...
Create another one for mirrors.
