MG TD TF 1500 - Torque Values

I have to change the oil seal on the rear axle of my 1955 MGTF as it is leaking oil into one of the rear brake drums

Looking at an archive thread, it points to a torque value for the rear axle hub nut of 85 ftlb. The members of my local MG Club who do restorations state that the hub nut torque should be 170 ftlb for the rear axle and the front axle hub nut torque should be 85 ftlb

I believe the 170 ftlb value is correct. Can anyone convince me otherwise?

My Workshop Manual for the TF does not include the torque value for this hub nut in the Torque Table

My TF has wire wheels but I can't see that this makes a difference

150 ft-lbs is plenty for the rears.

This may not be the source of your problem but it only takes a minute to check. Make sure the little breather hole on the top of the axle housing is open. My TD always used to leak oil into one of the drums, but when I rebuilt the car I discovered the hole had half an inch of crud plugging it and pressure build up in the housing had forced oil past the seal. I now keep it clean and there are no more leaks. To tell the truth, I owned the car for years and never knew there was a breather hole.

There are a couple of torque lists in the archive. On the breather hole, when I fitted the 4.3 I also added a couple of other MGA mods. The saddles for the U bolts to prevent wear on the axle housing & the mushroom for the breather hole. Not original I know but the saddles are all but invisible & the mushroom keeps crap out of the housing. Cheers

My new rear coming from Dave Clark will have a breather on it from a later model rear. 4.1 with hard axles. PJ

IIRC, Dave's instructions are to start at 85 and go up to 170 to line up the cotter pin hole. If this doesn't work, try swapping nuts from one side to the other.

I was good at about 95 - 100 on each side.
