The Eddie Aikau Big Wave Invitational was held at Waimea Bay last Thursday. The conditions were spectacular - as big as it gets, and very challenging. Most of us didn't get much work done as we watched the livestream on our computers.

Eddie Aikau was a great Hawaiian surfer and lifeguard who paddled off on his surfboard to get help for the crew of the voyaging canoe "Hokulea" in 1978. The canoe was capsized and drifting away from safety. Eddie was never seen again (see link below).

Brock Little was another great Hawaiian surfer who distinguished himself in the 1990 competition. He was diagnosed with cancer in January and passed just over a week ago. So there was a lot of emotion going into this event.

It is off topic but I love it. Got interested in surfing when I started to read about Laird Hamilton and what he accomplished riding the big waves. very interesting story that one should read. Never surfed in my life but riding big waves it really facinating. PS look up Lair Hamilton riding thru I think the Long Beach Pier, scary as hell.

I watched most of it Jim including Eddie's 66 year old brother Claude's heat. Huge surf! Young John John Florence pipping the 49 year old Aussie Ross Clarke Jones was a bit of a bummer though :-( Cheers

I was rooting for Ross too. He got the best wave (score of 96). There's a lot to be said for that.

WoW! I've done a lot of crazy things in my lifetime, but nothing as crazy as that. Those waves are amazing. Takes a lot of guts and skill to do what those guys are doing. Thanks for sharing the video Jim, very enjoyable. PJ
