MG TD TF 1500 - Transmission ground strap
Hope you all don't mind all the questions. I keep running into different things that I need answers for.
I note in one of the factory pictures, there is a ground strap off one of the bell housing bolts on the left side. I also see that Moss lists the strap. (I did not have this on my car) First question. Where does this attach on the frame? How long is it? I found this neet brass ground strap in my spares. It is 9 inches long. Is this what the original ground strap looked like? Or is this the front ground strap? ![]() |

Bruce,
This should definitely be installed. It connects (and grounds) the gearbox and engine combination to the chassis, car body and the battery ground terminal. Most cars have a ground strap like this, mainly for guaranteeing a high-amp current (perhaps 200-300amp) connection from the battery ground through to the starter motor. Thinking about it further, the only other 'high current' connection between the body and the engine would be via the thick metal rear axle/diff/tailshaft components. There are possibly other routes too, eg. clutch pedal through to clutch. Best to keep high starter motor currents from having to pass through thin brackets, bearings, etc. I've connected the other end of the strap to the underside of a bolt head which fastens the LHS stiffener bracket which supports the firewall. It is only a couple of inches away from the bell housing. Ideally the strap should be on the right hand side, nearer to the starter motor, or even connected to one of the starter motor's fastener bolts. The ground strap is Moss part 332-070 - Cable, frame to gearbox. |

Bruce on our cars strap goes to the bolt on left side firewall brace. You should have pics in your bolt documentary photos. Of dad’s car or mine. If not I’ll send pic directly to you phone |

Thanks All. 44 years without this strap and no issues, but I understand the importance of it. Also, thanks PJ for activating an old thread on the topic. The picture LaVerne posted in that thread looks very much like the strap I have in my spares. |
