MG TD TF 1500 - Two TDs Being Parted Out

FYI. There are two TDs being parted out on the San Francisco Bay Area Craigslist. Item # 5799724639. I have no interest in this.

I hate it when this happens as just about anything can be restored. This was brought back by a friend of mine. Cheers

Mike one TD is left as a melding of the remaining pieces See below

Peter The cars belong to me. Though I generally will agree with you I don't here. One car was purchased as parts for my own projects. The entire perfect undamaged body was transferred onto TD/c-16920 to further its restoration. The TD/c s original timbers were completely rotted and require complete wood kits and a lot of labor and associated costs I'm not up to doing. In addition the sheetmetal had been crashed and amateur repairs had been made by POs. The then rolling chassis and running gear w/ a B series conversion that mated to the original trans was sold complete to further some one else's project, recoup some of my costs and provide working capital to further this and other projects. That's one dead car that was parted so that two will live on. Certainly, one more sought after (TD/c ) vs
the parts car. (Std TD)

The second car was originally purchased as the donor car for TD/c-16920 but ended up being a real parts car. It had set in the Mojave desert for 35 yrs. Note to others desert cars can be bad buys. It's tub and damaged front wings went to SoCal to move another MK II project forward and satisfy the debt for the purchase of my dads TD/c-8151. ( A car that truly deserves restoration for the quality car that it is). The engine in the donor car had a broken crank, moderate wood rot, no interior or canvass and heavy front sheet metal damage.

As of this writing I have enough pieces to build the '53 car I'm parting out sans a crank shaft.and using the sheetmetal originally on TD/c -16920. Since you seem to think all cars should be saved you can send me $3500 US, a shipping container and provide cartage ....then it can sit at your house for restoration as I'm sure you are just chomping at the bit to start on it. Lol

Let's see. So far three TD/c's will be resurrected and one std TD will be resurrected because of these two dead/junk cars. There are enough fitted parts to still build one '53 car with spares when you send me the very reasonable $3500 asking price. Just kidding. FYI I don't part cars for profit and don't part cars that can potentially be restored for a reasonable return in my humble opinion. (Others may be more dedicated but after restoring TD-4834 I know where the pitfalls are for me and where the point of no return is). But when there is no interest in them whole, but for only the high value trinkets which I haven't chose to sell yet, when they have been offered here, the mg exp site as well as the related mg FB sites then and only then parting them becomes the next option. I'm sure you'll agree parting is certainly preferred over scrapping them outright. I agree all cars could be saved. The reality is; Not all cars can be saved, not all cars will be saved and certainly not all cars should be saved. Used OEM and NOS parts are far more useful and preferable than much of the junk offered through Asian aftermarket sources and therefore have a purpose in this hobby. Remember that as I'm sure you have bought use original parts in the past. Did you think about where they came from?

Laverne. Thank you for your comment I was not aware there was a problem with the number Phone number has been corrected I think

Hi Bill. I understand your situation however I still believe that all of these cars should be saved. Most if not all of the original parts I've managed to find are either NOS, used parts originally considered non repairable, (such as the ignition switch, thermostat housing, water pump etc), or come from other makes such as the engine, engine components & ancillary equipment from the Wolseley 444. Obviously as most of the TD's went to the States they are more common there & parting out is perhaps less of an issue. As long as there is a chassis, then I firmly believe any car can & should be restored. I have been fortunate in acquiring a pretty comprehensive list of a great many parts from other makes, cars that few people are interested in, with original parts that are interchangeable with the TD. This was compiled by someone here who has a passion for T Types, a person who has restored a great many T Types & who hundreds of owners here are indebted to. He has forgotten more than I'll ever know about these rare & irreplaceable cars. Cheers

Hi Peter,

I'm a died in the wool MG enthusiast and don't want to be disrespectful, but I don't agree with your comment that TD's are 'rare & irreplaceable cars'. And I think they are better for it!

Because they are not rare and irreplaceable you can enjoy them to the fullest in a way you like best.
Without worrying that you destroy something irreplaceable, you can race, modify, drive and restore in any colour you like with chrome wire wheels or even part out cars that are too far gone to accommodate other restorations.

It would be a shame to let an abandoned car rot in the desert, better to part them out to other enthusiasts and replenish your hobby budget?

There are worries in Europe about qualifying as a tax-exempt classic car when the only part is an original chassis, so your comment 'as long as there is a chassis, then I firmly believe any car can & should be restored' is risky in Europe from a tax point of view.

And to conclude with my tongue firmly planted in my cheeck; if you really want to protect rare and irreplaceable cars, stop promoting the use parts from Wolseley 4/44's (or God forbid even MG Y-types) ;-)
