MG TD TF 1500 - Unique wiper blade
Looking at the wiper blades I took off the car 5 years ago, I thought it was quite unique. Instead of one rubber, it has 5 layered rubbers, one long center and two on each side of different widths. The center mount rocks from side to side. Made in England, I've never seen a blade made like this. Would this be an original type? PJ One of 3 pictures, ![]() |

Yes Trico made them layered. |

Thanks Rod. If I could get the rubber, I'd like to restore these blades. Not now, don't have the time, later, just for the fun of it. PJ |

Paul, I did mine as follows. Purchased a professional window washers squeege at a janitorial supply. About $5.00. Cut the rubber off the squeeze then opened the stainless backing of the blade. Inserted the new rubber and closed the steel with some end-nippers. Took several tries to get the rubber in straight but now works fine. Regards, Jim Haskins 1953 TD |

I am reactivating this thread to offer another solution to restoring an original wiper blade. In this instance the 7 inch TF blade. I am fortunate to have George Higginson, a BBS member as a friend. George gave me a pair of original blades with no rubber remaining. I knew I could not reproduce the layered rubber blade, but wanted a profile that looked OEM. I found a TRICO 61-210 (21inch for flat glass windscreens) had a good profile and was very inexpensive ($7.00 US). I am very satisfied with the result. I apologize in advance for the following lengthy series of photos, but I wanted to share my solution. ![]() |

This is the profile of the Trico rubber.

The 21 inch Trico provides more then enough material for two blades.

trim the rubber to the correct depth to fit the original blade.

I used a leather punch to make a hole to clear the center rivet in the original blade holder.

CAREFULLY crimp the blade holder with nipper type pliers.

The finished product. Thanks again George!

Thanks JR, great idea. Stored in a box, I'll have to dig them out. I have the repo replacements on the car now, but would love to have the originals on it. I have the original arms also. PJ |

I think I've found a supplier for the original type strips of rubber. Can be had in various thickness and widths. I just need to check the thickness of the original rubber in the blades to match. I would like to repair them as original with 5 layers. Be interesting. PJ |

Paul let us know how this progresses and the suppliers contact info if indeed it works out to your satisfaction. |

Will do Bill, now I need to figure out what box I put them in! Grin. |

Paul Seeing your post reminded me of when I first got my TD on the road in the 1970's I fitted TF wipers as I have been driving in Germany on the autobahn during the 3 years I was posted there and wanted a better water removal system. I did not have the luxury of a TF to look at so just worked it out and fitted a wooden rail under the Dash to mount the wiper wheel boxes on. It worked better then the TD original, just. But I have since taken the TF wipers off and gone back to the original system. My TD when first put together, went like a rocket and good wipers were important. Over time I realized it was just wearing out faster and removed a lot of the Go faster stuff. These were the blades I fitted back then and they worked pretty well. Not original I am sure and that was not my focus. I just wanted an MG that drove really well. ![]() |
