MG TD TF 1500 - Unknown bracket

Hi can anyone please tell me what the bracket (the one with the hole in) and welded to the rear axel (facing forward) is for???

I also noted that the U-bolts were threaded UNF. Is this normal? This is all on a 1954 TF.

Regards. John

A wider version was fitted to the Wolseley 4/44 and possibly the Morris MO Oxford. Also fitted to the Morris "J" van. not sure of the width.

Hi John,
My TF8958 build date 20/01/1955 has this bracket on the diff housing.
Owned the car since 1969 & to my knowledge diff not a replacement.
Would be interesting to hear from other TF owners.
Cheers John

It’s on TF2071.

Thanks everyone for your comments and info I seem to recall the same question being asked several years ago.
I have searched the archives and found nothing.
Does anyone know or think if it’s a method of changing the back axle ratio ??
Any ideas with regards to the U bolt threads being UNF ??

This is a YB rear housing which isn't the same as the T series housing, but the brackets in the same basic place in question on this car are for the shock links. Not sure what other car the T series rear was used to use these brackets, but it appears they are shock link brackets. PJ

PJ,
I think you will find that the YB had the same axle as our TD and TF and the same wheels. These cars were my source of spares in the early 70's.
The YA had a similar axle to the TC and 16" wheels.

They could be constituent parts of the Smiths Jackall jacking system, and would hold the two jacks that were attached to the rear axle - such an axle would have originally been fitted onto a YB.

If it is a YB rear axle, then the diff ratios were different.
The YB rear axle pinion & crownwheel gears were 8:41, with the ratio being 5.125:1.
The TF rear axle pinion & crownwheel gears were 8:39, with the ratio being 4.875:1.
It might be worth checking the diff ratio - the pinion & crownwheel gears (number of teeth) was often stamped on the axle housing.
