MG TD TF 1500 - Unusual find

I just installed four way flashers and had to lift the felt in that toolbox to drill holes to mount a relay bracket. I found this single strip 0.019 inch feeler gauge under the felt.
Why is this a standard with the TD's?
If so it could have been under there for 68 years.

Isn't .019 the gap for valve adjustment. Somebody is still scratching their head wondering where that feeler gauge went.

The ones I've seen on Ebay also have a feeler gauge for the points. Does that have one Mort?

Great find Mort. Definitely an original tool for setting the tappets. Here's another. Cheers

Well, not a feeler gauge, nor found under the felt in th toolbox, but in the spirit of the thread title I found this in an antique shop this week.

So that's a "Tapley Meter" ! I wonder how it works ?

Cheers.

Ahhhh the original Tapely Meter. I first learned of them when Jaguar installed them in the first C-Types to measure deceleration on their just-introduced "disc brakes"!!.

In fact, they're still available .. have a look at http://www.bowmonk.com/.

Those old Road & Track roadtests always quoted figures from the Tapely meter. Never knew what that was about, now I do. Very interesting.

Fascinating.......

I couldn’t resist buying it. Last time I saw one used was about 10 years ago when the MoT guy said his roller brake testing system couldn’t cope with my TF and they would have to test the brakes ‘the old fashioned way’. So he brought out one of these, put it on the passenger-side floor and off we went. A couple of hard stops later and the car passed.
The meter is mounted on a cast iron base and is very heavy. And it works.
The women in the shop were quite bemused by the item but were of course selling it on behalf of another dealer. It was on a shelf amidst porcelain and silver ...

I acquired something similar last year - The Siemens version of the brake tester (works with liquid).
Comes with a nice little suitcase around it for transport.

Best Regards

I was told this many years ago.
To test brakes:-

Lay a brick on the floor frog side up if it rolls over on braking you have perfect brakes.

Lay frog down you have good bakes

Lay on edge you have bad brakes

Lay it on end you have a Austin 7.
