MG TD TF 1500 - Update on original paint.

Well, things got a bit more confusing on my car. When I purchased my TD in 1973, it was a dark green color with large areas of silver and also large areas of primer.

When we stripped the paint off, I found the last coat was a brownish color. Black primer under that and then bare steel.

I thought this was Sun Bronze, so I have been looking to get that color.

Well, today I took out the dash and the inner dash wood to look at the upper edge of the cowl. I found green paint under where the inner wood sits against the cowl. There is also green paint on the inner dash.

It looks like there is also another paint there that appears to be sun bronze, but I cant get enough of it uncovered to confirm.

So one question would be were the cars painted with the inner dash in place?

The issue I have with the green, is the original interior was red. I don't see a green/red combination for the TD.

Still have all the interior to remove and I am hoping to still find some areas were we did not remove the base paint. I know the inside back of the tub was painted silver by someone, so I am hoping I can get some of it off to find the original color.

Here is a picture that shows the green on the door.

Bruce, the slides Tim references above lead to what I suggested in our texts yesterday. As you can see there is a clear delineation from red to primer suggesting the the subdash was mounted prior to top coating. The subdash would clearly had overspray if it was in the pic. This would make sense as it would provide the added rigidity to the scuttle to prevent damage as it was moved from the assembly line to the paint shop

My TD had its inner dash replaced many years ago, so I can't comment on that, but there was clearly the original green overspray on the bottom side of the scuttle humps.

Bruce I forgot to say that it would be prudent that in the instance of having a quality repaint that the dash would be removed. I know you had wrote to me that it may also show a bit of the sun bronze. Once you strip the interior you may find better evidence of that color as well in the doors and around the inside tub timbers as well. You could either rub down the under scuttle to see what lies under the green of do a scrapping and see what lies underneath to confirm what the original color my truly be.

Thanks Tim.

Bill. Should have the interior out when you visit. Will have to strip off the silver on the back wood.

As you can see, the green goes farther in. It is also a different green than the color of the outside which is a dark green.

You can't see the bronze color in this photo, but it appears to be under the green but above the black/charcoal primer.

Here is an original picture of the car as I got it in 1973. You can see the green driver door. Also the red edge of the back interior panel.

Yes. This was not in the best of shape when I got it.
