MG TD TF 1500 - Updated Photos - XPEG977

Thought you would like to see the progress that George Pardee is making on the engine in my TF-1500. He updates this Google Photos album as new steps are accomplished. Also note the photos of repairs to the block that were apparently made at the foundry or the Works. The album also has a video of his latest VSCCA race at Club Motorsports in Tamworth NH.

George and Nick's rebuild is going faster than my wood replacement. I'm no farther along that when the photo of my chassis in the Google album was taken in mid-July. Still working on the new hinge and latch pillars on the drivers side. Haven't started the passenger side. I don't have a clue about what I am doing!

Keep plugging away Lonnie. It always seems it takes longer than we planned it to be.

Thanks for the link, Lonnie...brings back old memories!

Fascinating. But also a testament of how much abuse these little cars can take and still keep running. Probably why they were so popular with weekend racers in the 50's.

Lonnie, a friend of mine laughed at my TF rebuild taking two years in 71/72. His took 14 years....

Good Luck, David

Time to put in that supercharger maybe?

Lonnie - very nicely documented. Good to see my ARP main studs in place!

Had the car sat for a while? The erosion to the bearings is typical of bearings with old, acid oil sitting for a period of time.

Yes, those are your ARP main studs. George won't use anything else!

The car may have sat for extended periods between driving.

The car was driven frequently by owner #2 (1963-1968) and by owner #3 (1968-1970).

Owner #4 (1970-2013) drove it daily for a couple of years. Cosmetically restored in the 80s and driven much less frequently. Always stored inside. She loved the car but was not a "mechanic."

The 1500 engine had a 22952 head (TC/early TD) when I bought it Dec 2013. Pitting in a cylinder or two indicated that they had been wet for a while, possibly while the original head was off or out of commission by a leaking or cracked head. Cylinders cleaned up with only 0.010" honing. I replaced the head with a proper AEF118 head a few months after purchase.

I haven't driven it a lot since I bought it, mostly because it needed a lot of sorting out. However the drives were usually a good distance and the car was fully warmed. Probably changed the oil and filter about every 500 miles.

I really appreciate the Google Photo album from George and Nick Pardee to keep me up to date on the progress.

I'm a pretty slow guy (mentally and driving). Still have the original 4.875 diff. But if I were to add a supercharger, then I would want George to do the job. You can't get much better than a TF race driver/owner/mechanic to build a TF engine.

Thanks for the link. The photos and comments are interesting and useful. I wish George were nearby, he would be a great help to me.
