MG TD TF 1500 - Updated Unrestored 51 TD Slides

I got a slide scanner last week and was able to update the pictures I took back in 1977 of the unrestored 1951 MGTD at GoF XXIV. They are now 4 times the resolution so they can actually be looked at in detail now.

Chris. I can bring up period 35mm slides and original pics of dads car after I have recuperated from my surgery . I also have pics of the TF coming as well if you would like them for the TF site

Is that really 'unrestored'?

The polished finish on the air cleaner ducting was surely not how it left the factory. My TDII was 11 year's old when I acquired it and these parts were certainly in an as-cast finish.

If that was 'improved' what else benefitted from the PO's skills?
Ian Bowers

That car had to be in a very controlled environment for 26 years for it to have that nice of a finish on the firewall and rear fenders.

I also question what appears to be gloss black paint on the horns.

Obviously, the car has had some work on it. I believe we have agreed that the oil filler chain was not covered.

That does not mean it is not an unrestored car.

Bruce Cunha

IIRC the car had less than 30,000 miles on it. This was 1977 and so it was 25 years old and the car was pampered it's whole life.

You can see some of the updates in terms of hoses, spark plug wires, oil filter, battery cables, battery, fuel lines, fan belt, exhaust pipe paint, tires ...

As far as the shiny black paint: I think they put pledge or some other oily stuff all over when they showed it. That gave a lot of the parts a glossy look.

The air cleaner duct on this car was shiny. Again I think from hand polishing and pampering. If you look at the float bowls they are not as shiny as the dashpots and intake.

So this car was like TF9052. Not an off the carrier car, but a non restored and pampered car.

BTW the original owners family still owns the car.
Christopher Couper

IMHO, keeping a car going and replacing parts as needed does not detract from it being an unrestored car.

I did forget the pictures are from 1977.

I owe apologies to previous owners of my car for the really poor fit of the glove box door. I see from these pics it appears to be factory “quality”.

Tom: That is about as bad as I have ever seen one. I think I would have asked the dealer to fix it. :-)
