MG TD TF 1500 - Use of gasket dressing for SU's
When re-installing the SU's on my TD, should I use any gasket dressing on the gaskets for carb to intake manifold? Carb to air cleaner manifold? If so, what is recommended? Thanks in advance. Mike |

Mike, If the mating surfaces are true and flat I have never used any sealant. Later disassembly is easier with no cleaning required if you do not gum-up the surfaces. Regards, Jim Haskins 1953 TD |

If the mating surfaces are true to each other, I don't use any type of a dressing and only use new gaskets and never re use old ones. If any dressing is needed, I spray the gaskets with High Tack, let them dry to a tacky surface before setting them in place. If the mating surfaces are not true, I hone them on plate glass and fine carborundum paper until the high spots disappear. Needless to say, I don't like using gasket sealers if not needed, but that's just me. PJ |

The carb flanges are often slightly bowed and surfaces often beaten up. I always use either a very thin film of blue Permatex or Permatex aviation sealant between the carb and intake manifold gaskets. Leaks are very common there, even if perfect faces I would still use a sparing amount. Carb to air cleaner not so crucial. George |

Agree with George...easy enough to separate later but strong enough bond to eliminate leaks now. Gene |

Thank you for your replies. I will plan to use a very small amount on the gaskets between the carb and intake manifold. Appreciate the comments. Regards, Mike |
