MG TD TF 1500 - value of a xpeg engine

What would be the value of a complete xpeg engine in very good condition.Us $ thanks Michael ohalloran
Michael O'Halloran

I bought one as a spare about 5 years ago and paid $500AU. That was a great buy. Intact with sump, head, oil and water pump etc. I've seen XPAG's on Ebay with sellers asking $10,000. Tough to put a figure on it. Depends on condition. Most will want to strip it down and rebuild it, just for their own piece of mind. Even engines that the owner claims to have been "restored" can cost thousands to put right. No simple answer. It's worth whatever someone is prepared to pay. Cheers

$500AU is a steal for an XPEG/1500. I've seen them sell for thousands here in the US. Even a common 1250 TD/TF engine typically goes for at least $1000 in running but shabby condition. I just sold one recently for $900 non-running.

I'm afraid the question is far too vague. What's an MG worth? It depends on the condition, the completeness, what it needs to run and the demand. XPEG engines are the scarcest of MG engines, since only 3,400 1500 cars were made.

For instance: you say "in very good condition." So it runs? How about the oil pressure? You know the specs on the bore size, the crank dimensions, and the head thickness? Unless you know those, it is a core engine, a risk for the buyer.

Does it have the accessories: the starter, generator, distributor, manifolds, carbs, covers and the like? Is it bolt-in ready? Or is it a basic engine, together but LOOKING in good shape, without the starter, generator, carbs or distributor? An entirely different beast.

About 5 years ago I had an XPEG engine I tried to sell, a complete engine with +.020" bore that I heard run, and I tried at least 5 times to list and sell it, from $3,500, and finally had ONE person offer me $1,500, which I took. Last year I had a good engine, dismantled with head and rods, standard bore, and sold it for $3,500 to a restoration shop that needed it badly for a customer car.

I remember seeing an XPEG on eBay 6 months ago that did not sell for $7,500, and I have a Holy Grail NOS XPEG complete long block, never run, that I would struggle to let go for $8,500.

So it's a matter of condition, completeness and demand. Will selling this engine pay for your hot-rod Edney engine? No. Would selling its original engine lessen your car's value? Yes.

Peter H.,

Are you saying you bought genuine XPEG TF1500 motor for $500AU ! Wow !
That would be a great buy. (Cyl. Head AEF118 -stamped),block AEF117-cast in).

Hi Rob. I didn't pay much attention to the engine designation of the original post, misreading it as XPAG. The one I purchased came from a Wolseley which I now know has the XPAW designation but is purported to be almost identical to the XPAG TD engine. The major visible differences apart from the casting number on the block are the location of the dipstick and the lack of an MG emblem cast behind the generator. Like the TD it's also a 1250 not the 1500 XPEG. Still happy with the outlay especially as the engine is complete and turns freely. I'll strip and rebuild it once the restoration of my TD is complete. Unfortunately, the designation XPEG is critical to this post; XPAG values are completely meaningless in this context.

It was not my intention to mislead Tom, however the comments I made regarding value are still valid, whether XPEG, XPAG or XPAW. Obviously, as with anything, the scarcer the engine the greater the potential value. Cheers

Sold an XPAG runner without carbs but with a starter motor ,bellhousing and clutch etc and an alloy sump for $350---probably too cheap then eh------------why did I do that

How much are hen's teeth going for these days?

Interpolating the data within Mr. Lange's comment would put in somewhere in the range of $3,500 to $8,500, depending upon it's condition and accoutrements.

(I know of once that recently changed hands right there.)

Interesting that a number of XPAG blocks in various states of completion have bobbed up on AUS "Fleabay". Prices could be of interest.
