MG TD TF 1500 - Valve Cover Gasket
Tried to install a 25 to 30 year old brand new valve cover gasket. It first broke on the back end when I tried to stretch it around the head bolt nuts. Glued it back together and then carved it to clear. Got everything clamped down and started to poor oil in thru valve cover. Well, you all know what happened, oil came running out on the distributor side of the valve cover. Any of those silicone gaskets still out there for purchase? Also do you use a contact gasket cement when installing this gasket? |

Buy one of Tom Lange's (tlange (at) acadia.net)gaskets and stick it to the head with your favorite cement. Bud |

Stick the bottom of it to the head but put nothing in the valve cover side or you will need to replace it every time you want to adjust the valve clearances. Dave H |

Contact cement on one side, grease on the other side for all paper / cork gaskets! |

I put one of Toms gaskets under the valve cover and the side cover, they don't leak and easy to work with. PJ |

Thanks Guys! That what I was looking for. Will get some ordered tonight if I can. |

Thanks Tom! The gaskets arrived. Will try them on later today after it warms up a bit. 36 right now. Bob Rosa |

I'm ordering a side cover gasket from Tom; I have one of the valve cover gaskets. Definitely a good investment and much more durable than a standard gasket... |

Sure, one of the special gaskets mentioned would be nice. I have never used glue anywhere on a gasket. If you have an old and dried up cork valve cover gasket, soak in oil, and take a chance. If new cork, new enough to fit over rockers w/o breaking, I use a non hardening (not silicone) gasket sealer like Hylomar or Permatex #85420 (fuel resistant gasket dressing & sealant). I put it all over the cork surfaces, and wipe off any excess. Works great on paper gaskets, (like sump) too. I tried some recently on the cork seal on the sump, and seems to have "conditioned" the cork just right. Just need a very thin, even coat. The black non-hardening Permatex would maybe bleed in this application. |
