MG TD TF 1500 - 've been meaning to do something about this

So I got a new muffler from the motherland. I put it in this morning...I'll do a comparison video later.

Sounds great! Where's the snow?

Is this the old one or the new one? Is the new SS?

No snow to speak of this year...mildest winter I can remember ...

Here is the replacement...both are stainless...warranteed for life...against rust through..unfortunatley the guts were gone out of the old one...fun for a while but it got to be annoying...I must be gettin old..

Here's the new one... I can live with it....

How many miles did old one last?

IMHO: The supercharger gives the car an "unnatural whine". I think you should remove it and find someone (in Ohio) that would trade you even up for a pair of SU's. The tranny sounds a little "strange" as well ...but you may be able to find "someone" (again in Ohio) that would swap you for a 4 speed! LOL

(Sounds nice!)

About 20000 miles Ed, I guess I was just to hard on it. I'm gonna cut the old one open when I get a chance to see if there is anything left in it. They don't rust out but the guts didn't last as long as it should have. Warranty on corrosion only...ughh The extra growl was fun for a while but got to be pretty annoying for both me and those traveling around me. Should be much more pleasant with the replacement.

I think you need to get your hearing checked David...but I do appreciate the offer :-)

I tried to do the same for Gene and his Manley Ford headers...sometimes people just can't accept the generosity of others :-)

LaVerne,
The first video is very similar to my TD sound,,, I guess all of the packing in mine is gone!! But I don't have any thoughts of changing it,,,It sounds great going under overpasses or through tunnels!

Mine sounds like the first one (on the car 15 years) ...when I think it is too loud I just start my Dawgkota pick-up ...even it is not nearly as loud as my idiot neighbor's 2014 Diesel with the 6" exhaust sticking out of his truck bed. Every time he drives by I think of my childhood when I put playing cards in my spokes! LMAO

LaVerne, was either the old muffler or the new one straight thru or baffled ?. The muffler I took off the TF I am working on is baffled and I can see evidence of excessive heat on the front stainless exhaust pipe I think caused by excessive back pressure and very little on the tail pipe. Plan is to replace it with a "Porter" steel pack in stainless which is a straight thru muffler. Would like to use a "Smitty" which is glass pack and the correct overall length but not available in stainless.

Fred the two are identical as I did not want to replace any of rest of the system. Both are straight through design. Pipe through the center of the can is perforated pipe (it isn't stainless either). My guess is that the packing between the shell and the center pipe was fiberglass and that it simply disappeared over time. If could weld stainless I would have had a go at repacking the thing. I've had the same kind of system by the same manufacture on my B for over 20 years now with no complaints. Also put the same one on the TD that I just sold and no issues there. Could be with the super charger and the long days at high rpm I simply cooked the guts. I've have some other projects in front of me now but I still believe when I get a chance I'll cut it open and have a look at the insides.

Still running my mild steel Moss supplied muffler I fitted in 1977 and it is still working well 22,000 miles later.
