MG TD TF 1500 - vented or not vented

I found the carburetor air piston slides on my TF acting very differently and tracked it down to the damper oil fill plugs on each SU. When I switched them I moved the issue to the other carburetor. One air piston was definitely sticking and harder to raise and I could see side wear on the brass piston assembly. Both of my caps are unvented. So I ordered 2 new ones from Abingdon Spares. One came vented and one was unvented like the ones on my carburetors. So the vent is a simple approx. 1/16 inch dia drilled hole in the cap. Now I wonder which is right so if anyone has a moment to look at theirs and report back. Also has anyone found the venting to help or hurt.

It all depends on what sort of carb you have. If the top of the carb where the cap screws on is solid round, then you need vented caps. If there is an angled piece (the vent) connecting the top to the chamber, then you need an un-vented cap.

It doesn't matter if you have a vented or un-vented carb, long as the damper cap is correct for the type you have, it will function correctly.

My carbs are both vented, but, when I bought the car, one damper was solid, as it should be and one was vented. The car ran fine, but I plugged the vented damper cap with solder and everything works as it should. PJ

Figure out which type of dampers that your SUs should have. Then return the incorrect one to A/S for replacement.

I used JB Weld to accomplish the same task that Paul did for one of my dampers that was incorrectly vented. The color is not the same as the rest of the brass cap.

I am pretty sure my chambers are internally vented but I will check for sure to know which one to send back. My query was not all that dumb as I can see from all the impressive response
