MG TD TF 1500 - Vertical oil filter details

Clausager and Chris Couper note:

Purolator oil filter replaced by Wilmot Breeden Filter Jul 1950 (e) 2985

What's the difference? Let me be clear that this is NOT the horizontal/vertical filter question; at car about 2985 this must refer to early vertical filters.

Thanks. Tom Lange

I don't think it was much. They were both throw aways from my memory.
Christopher Couper

There's something in my mind about the Wilmot Breeden being of a larger diameter. Later on another modification was needed to the bracket for the filter and the number of bolts needed to install it on the block.
Will have to look this up when I'm at home...

In his book "MG T-series in detail" page 171,Paddy Willmer writes: "XPAG/TD/2985, 26-7-50, Purolator oil filter PTX346 (MG part# 162438) replaced the original Wilmot Breedon filter (MG part# X22768). The clamp straps were widened and changed from 2 bolt fixing to 3 bolts; thus the pad on the block was enlarged to have 3 tapped holes (2 in the same position as before), but the later oil filter does fit both clamps. New block casting no 24445 (with "MG"logo), head casting unchanged."
My MG service literature mentions the change of bracket (due to breakages of the old strap)in service letter # 44. Nothing on the oil filter though...
The 1950 parts manual gives the oil filter as MG part# MG862/39 commencing at XPAG/TD501.
AKD834 gives the oil filter as part # X22768 commencing at XPAG/TD501 and finishing at XPAG/TD14223.
Both manuals only mention the change of bracket at XPAG/TD2985...
The Purolator oil filter part# 162438 is found on page G.3 of AKD834 and is the complete horizontal filter assembly found on engine XPAG/TD14224 and later, which was an alternative to part# 164711; the Tecalemit filter assembly.
Both filters are also found in AKD580, the TF parts manual.
Seems that Willmer got a few things mixed up here and there was no change of oil filter at engine# 2985, only of the mounting bracket ???!!!
Hope this helps,

I found a possibly relevant article in an index for TSO in the Oct. 2005 issue. My issue is in a box and not accessible at the moment. I can find it this weekend, or maybe someone else could check it out. I recall reading an article at some time in the past with some different pictures of original filters, so that could be it. The article, "TB/TC/TD/TF oil filter development", was written by Bob Grunau. There are 4 images, "Cut-away showing correct oil flow through Bob's adapter", "Failed cast aluminum second generation adapter", "Oil filter vadapter fitted to a TC with stock oil lines", and "Oil filter adapter with TD pump, flexible oil lines and heavy duty mounting strap on Bob's race TC". Bud, thanks for looking article up. I'll keep looking for the info I think I saw if it was not in there. George

My guess is that part of the "confusion" originates because of page P.3 of the workshop manual which states: "The filter is of the throw-away type and its part# is MG862/39. Care must be taken to see that the filter connections are replaced properly, and that there are no oil leaks. On engines previous to No. XPAG/TD2985 an alternative filter (Part# 24475) may be used provided that special narrow brackets (Part# MG862/394 and MG862/393) are also used."

Funny thing is that this information is given only in my 1953 workshop manual. The 1950 issue does not give information of this sort and only mentions filter# MG862/39...

I cannot find a part number 24475 in my MG parts manuals. So this may be a late TC filter, an early Y or YT filter or even a Morris Ten Series M part...
Ofcourse if you HAVE to use the narrow brackets, you can only fit them to an engine block made before XPAG/TD2985 because of those two fixing bolts (?). Next questions which arises is: WHY can you use 24475 only with narrow brackets ?
