MG TD TF 1500 - Water pump bolt size
So, what size and type wrench is needed for water pump bolts? They seem to be between a 13 & 14 metric, and between 1/2 and 9/16 standard. ??? Cheers, Frank |

Mad metric, 5/16 BSF wrench, the bolt is either 6 or 8 by 1.0 metric. I can't remember which. You need a 5/16 BSF wrench, nothing else will do. British tool and fasteners has very high quality fully polished wrenches at very reasonable prices. |

Frank, see http://www.ttalk.info/Fasteners-For-XPAG-XPEG-Engines.htm for some info on that topic. Thanks to Dave DuBois. Bud |

Thank you....you did mean to say 5, as in five, /16 BSF......correct? |
Frank Bice |
That should be 1/4W spanner (the other end of the 5/16 spanner). Cheers - Dve |

They are 8mm threads. |

The bolt is a 5 x 0.75 mm (French Standard Metric) with a Whitworth head I thought the head was 3/16 BSF not 5/16 BSF (1/8 W not 1/4 W) |

I thought it was two bolts and two studs, nuts are smaller than the bolts if I remember right? could be wrong. |

I am an idiot! I ought to read more carefully! I was talking about the fan bolts ( 5 x 0.75 mm) with 3/16 BSF heads not the bolts from pump to block ( 8 X 1 mm) which are 5/16 BSF Wrench heads that you were asking about. You will find that a 5/16 BSF (1/4 W) wrench fits most of the bolts and nuts on a T series car ( Followed by a 1/4 BSF (3/16 W) wrench) Unfortunately the 5/16 BSF (1/4 W) head is not fit well by either metric or US wrenches of similar across the flats sizes ( they are all too big) If you only could have one wrench, get an open end 1/4 BSF on one end and a 5/16 BSF on the other ( 3/16 and 1/4 W) If 2 wrenches then I vote for a 2BA for the carbs and then a duplicate of the above i a box wrench |

Don, I was wondering what you were referring to :) mog, I don't recall studs, I thought it was four bolts but different lengths, two to accommodate the engine stabilizer bracket on the left (looking from the front of the engine back). But I'd have to check to be sure... |

service parts list shows, 2 bolts, 1 stud long, 1 stud short |
mog |
Thanks mog. Of course, someone could have replaced the studs with bolts at any time in the past! |
Geoffrey M Baker |
And I look at the manual and yes, it shows two studs. Now I wonder why a) they used studs in this situation and b) why someone replaced mine with bolts? I guess at sixty plus years old, there is little left on these cars that some PO hasn't tinkered with at some time :) |

The studs make remounting the pump easier,,,but I don't think that is the reason that they are used,,, SPW |

Studs should always be used in blind holes. If a bolt is used instead there is no way of being sure that it is clamping the mating parts. the risk is that it could be bottoming in the hole. John 52 TD |

Correct.....there are two bolts and two studs. I ordered a set of Whitworth wrenches from British Tool, should arrive tomorrow. Thanks all!! Cheers, Frank |
