MG TD TF 1500 - water pump grease

Hi, What modern equivalent is advised for greasing the water pump nipple please
JK Mazgaj

Friend-

Best to keep using the same grease as before, unless a fresh rebuild. Use what you have got in your greaser, but just a small bit or it goes into the coolant.

Are you sure what you are looking at there is a true nipple? Most of these replacement pumps have an artificial nipple that is simply for lookers. Good odds when you hook onto the nip you will not be able to handle the gun, as it goes into a dead stop in the housing for pump and not through it.

If you are running a genuine old rebuilt pump with provisions for taking on grease through that nipple, might I ask why? The first modern replacement pump I took on years back lasted better than 30K miles, while my best rebuild of the old style were closer to 10K, but most a bit less.

Hi P Ward,

It appears you have had failures with rebuilt original pumps. Were they the early or later type pumps? What failed? Was it the bearings or the seal? Where did you source the bits that failed? I always rebuild original pumps so your information might help me avoid problems in future.

Hi,
Nothing wrong with the pump as far as I'm aware (fingers crossed) it just sqeaked on start up after its winter lay-up. I would confirm that its NOT the belt. I'm assuming that its either dry or that the grease has hardened. The car was only aquired recently and I'm just coming to know it. I will check whether it is indeed a "dummy" nipple

JK-
Sounds from your report all well from startup on no more grease. Not know of lay over time as new owner. An old trick with such potential old grease, and if nipple or rebuildable type- is to inject some gear oil in through the nipple. This act gives assurances of some bearing lube on these trouble bearings and dry grease. If all goes well with gear oil give a dose of regular grease after.

P Warde I too am interested in your answers to Bob's questions as I'm rebuilding a couple of original pumps. My research suggests that the modern sealed pumps aren't as well made as the originals, particularly the later TD/TF pump, which if its been well maintained, is still in use in some cars today. The quality of modern sealed bearings vary considerably so I'm also keen to find alternative sources for bearings, as well as seals & impellers & a heavy duty, external 1/2" circlip with eyes in particular. If you'd prefer to contact me off line then email me at pjbm at bigpond dot com. The driver's handbook lists the grease that was originally used JK so the various suppliers should be able to give you a modern equivalent. Cheers
