MG TD TF 1500 - Water pump is here - 51TD engine rebuild continues

I received the water pump from Butch Taras today. looks good, my improved six vane impeller is on. I installed the pump today.
I still need to install the engine steady, lower radiator tube, pulley, fan blades and set the TDC/points before I can think about starting her up.... if I'm lucky, maybe the end of the week?
I still have to finish the interior carpeting and connect the clutch and steering wheel as well...
But another milestone met!

Does the pump from Butch require a dry "run in" to seat the seal??

My goodness Geoff, after all the posts covering allmost every topic, now an engine start gets very close. Very exciting. What about a youtube so we can share these lovely moments. Good luck, Huib

Steve, it does not. Butch has already done it.
Huib, I'll try to remember to take some video! It may be a while yet, I have actual work to do for the next few days...

Installed the pump and pulley and fan blades and all the hoses and the fan belt.
I think it's about ready to "just add water"!

Major setback, several leaks occurred when filling the radiator. Good news, no leaks at pump gasket or radiator itself, as far as I can tell, but my big top hose is split (I didn't notice it until now of course) and was pouring water. Additionally, the small thermostat return pipe was leaking at the gasket, and I don't dare tighten it down any more (cheesehead screws will strip).
Soooooooo... I guess its silicone hose time. I think if the return hose was more flexible I could fix the gasket on the return pipe, but the hose puts a lot of pressure on the pipe to keep it from seating on the gasket fully.
And definitely a new top hose piece.
Expensive...

Stopped down to the hose place (American Hose and Rubber, a Parker supply house with a million fittings and hoses for everything from cars to firehouses) and purchased some hose in the right sizes. A replacement top hose (not a "hump hose" but just a straight 2.25 inch silicone hose flexible enough to do the job) and some more flexible 1 inch hose. Installed it and will see how the leaks are in the morning. The silicone hose is definitely a nice replacement for the top hose, I could fit it on easily with my fingers, no fighting necessary. I'll report how it goes in the morning.

This morning I added water. Leaked from the top water gauge sensor because I'd forgotten to tighten that down. So far, looks like it's all holding.

No leaks! I'll drain it and put in antifreeze tomorrow. On to the next tasks - set to TDC, set distributor, set points, adjust valves, connect clutch. The list goes on forever...

Thanks for sharing your progress. Good work!

I finished connecting and setting up the clutch (required a new pedal box cover and clutch stop bolt modification). All done.
Today I set TDC, distributor, points, adjusted the valves.
I got in my missing Rajah connector from fleabay and installed that. Connected up the battery and the fuel pump.
Tomorrow, God willing, I will charge it, add water, and start her up.

Geoff there's plenty in the archive on the correct start up procedure after an engine rebuild. Maybe write a check list for yourself. Main two items are first ensuring adequate oil pressure (hand cranking followed by turning the engine over without spark) & running in the new (?) cam followers, if you haven't switched to the roller lifters. Hope it all goes well. Cheers
