MG TD TF 1500 - Water Pump Issue

Greetings everyone, I'm putting my TD back together after many years. The engine was rebuilt in 1998 and has been sitting in my garage. When I went to install the water pump, I noticed an irregularly shaped hole that must have been made by a PO. I can see what looks like a cut mark. Does anyone have any insights as to why the hole was made? Should I have it welded shut or install the pump and see what happens?

Looks like an original pump. This hole is to allow water & grease to escape. Leave it open. Check the pump body for a number cast into the unit. 24433 was the later TD/TF pump while 22838 was the TC early TD pump. The later pumps are much easier to restore. Check the bearings. Any sign of noise suggests they should be replaced. I have a 'how to' if you're interested. Cheers

Thanks Peter, I had a feeling the hole was legit. I'll check the bearings as you suggested. I checked the number and it was
24433.

Google "water pump weephole". To elaborate on Peter's post, all water pumps even on current cars have this. If/when the water seal fails, it starts leaking, you see coolant on the ground and you know to change the pump. The hole allows the water to leak out, whereas if it was sealed the water would work its way into the bearings which would of course cause failure. Simple but effective warning. George

A few drops of water per hour comes out from this hole in my TD and Moss has no seals. Anyone who knows where they can be obtained? A pump is cheap, but I take it as a challenge to fix it.

You can find them on eBay uk.

YS, I've successfully rebuilt a few of the 24433 pumps and have written an illustrated paper on the method, parts required and where they can be obtained, including the seal. If you email me at pjbm at bigpond dot com I'll send it to you. Please note however that this is on the condition that it's for your use only and is NOT for publication or circulation. Cheers

Thank you all for interesting information! It will make me go for a renovation instead of buying a new.
